OVERVIEW

Medicine is evolving rapidly into a genomic medicine discipline after successful sequencing of human genomes. As a result, traditional diagnostics, therapeutics and prognostics in patients will soon become outdated.

Recent advances in genomics have led to the identification of new genes responsible for hereditary and inflammatory diseases, generating a huge impact in our understanding the genetic basis of structural and functional defects and pathological mechanisms underlying ophthalmological diseases.

AIMS AND CONTENT

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course provides students with theoretical and practical knowledge of the molecular mechanisms responsible for hereditary pathologies in ophthalmology and on biomolecular techniques for their diagnosis and desirable treatment.

TEACHING METHODS

The teaching includes 8 hours of lectures.

N.B.: Students with valid certifications for Specific Learning Disorders (SLDs), disabilities or other educational needs are invited to contact the lecturer and the School/Department's disability referent at the beginning of the course to agree on possible teaching modalities that, while respecting the teaching objectives, take into account individual learning patterns.
