CODE 75377 ACADEMIC YEAR 2024/2025 CREDITS 1 cfu anno 3 ORTOTTICA ED ASSISTENZA OFTALMOLOGICA 9283 (L/SNT2) - GENOVA LANGUAGE Italian TEACHING LOCATION GENOVA SEMESTER 2° Semester MODULES Questo insegnamento è un modulo di: PSYCHO-VISUAL REHABILITATION II TEACHING MATERIALS AULAWEB OVERVIEW Medicine is evolving rapidly into a genomic medicine discipline after successful sequencing of human genomes. As a result, traditional diagnostics, therapeutics and prognostics in patients will soon become outdated. Recent advances in genomics have led to the identification of new genes responsible for hereditary and inflammatory diseases, generating a huge impact in our understanding the genetic basis of structural and functional defects and pathological mechanisms underlying ophthalmological diseases. AIMS AND CONTENT AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES The course provides students with theoretical and practical knowledge of the molecular mechanisms responsible for hereditary pathologies in ophthalmology and on biomolecular techniques for their diagnosis and desirable treatment. TEACHING METHODS The teaching includes 8 hours of lectures. N.B.: Students with valid certifications for Specific Learning Disorders (SLDs), disabilities or other educational needs are invited to contact the lecturer and the School/Department's disability referent at the beginning of the course to agree on possible teaching modalities that, while respecting the teaching objectives, take into account individual learning patterns. SYLLABUS/CONTENT Cellular structure and physiology DNA structure and biochemical characteristics The human genome Genes and variants Genetic alterations and mutations Molecular biology techniques applied to the diagnosis and treatment of genetic diseases Gene Therapy: most common vectors and techniques Hereditary diseases in ophthalmology RECOMMENDED READING/BIBLIOGRAPHY Reading items will be suggested or delivered by the teacher TEACHERS AND EXAM BOARD LUCA BAGNASCO Ricevimento: By appointment, send an email (luca.bagnasco@unige.it) or phone (010-353.8460).
