AIMS AND CONTENT

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

1. Knowledge of the prevalence of different mental disorders

2. Knowledge of the significance of epidemiology for clinical-therapeutic aspects and organizational models

3. Knowledge of the significance of epidemiology for the evaluation of therapeutic practices and the self-evaluation of clinical work

4. Knowledge of the meaning of prevention and the application of this concept in mental health

5. Knowledge of risk factors and protective factors for the development of mental pathologies

6. Knowledge of the clinical characteristics and course of the main psychiatric disorders

7. Development of reasoning skills on the application of the topics studied to clinical practice

TEACHING METHODS

Lectures with presentation of clinical cases.

Any Student with documented Specific Learning Disorders (SLD), or with any special needs, shall reach out to the Lecturer(s) and to the dedicated SLD Representative in the Department before class begins, in order to liase and arrange the specific teaching methods and ensure proper achievement of the learning aims and outcomes.

1. Fundamentals of epidemiology and the significance of epidemiology in mental health

2. Descriptive, analytical and experimental epidemiology

3. The contribution of epidemiology to the clinic and examples of epidemiological research

4. Epidemiology of mental disorders in adolescence

5. Epidemiology of anxiety disorders and eating disorders

6. Epidemiology of mood disorders and suicide

7. Epidemiology of schizophrenia and psychotic onset

8. Epidemiology of mental disorders in the elderly

9. Elements of pharmacoepidemiology

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The exam is carried out orally. The exam is graded out of thirty and passing the exam is subject to obtaining a score of at least 18/30. Weighted average with the other modules of the integrated teaching/course.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The exam is developed with the aim of evaluating the learning of basic knowledge relating to the epidemiology of the main psychiatric disorders.
