AIMS AND CONTENT

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

Statistics and epidemiology are aimed, in the context of the course, at the compilation and preparation of research protocols and understanding and selection of statistical investigation methods applied to the definition of evidence of efficacy in rehabilitation. To achieve these objectives, it is necessary to know the main designs of a clinical study and their role in producing information for clinical practice. Furthermore, to know the main electronic databases relevant to the health professions (Medline, EMBASE, CINAHL, Cochrane library) and the related research strategies of the scientific literature.

TEACHING METHODS

The course is held in the first semester of the first year through lectures.

Students with SLD, disability or other special educational needs certification are strongly encouraged to contact the teachers at the beginning of the course to agree on teaching methods which, respecting the teaching objectives, take into account individual learning methods and provide suitable compensatory instruments.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

During this course, the most important issues relating to the reading and interpretation of scientific articles in the rehabilitation field will be explored.

Effect measures and their interpretation. Statistical significance vs clinical significance. The sample size and statistical power. How to evaluate the quality of a scientific study. The most famous databases and how to find scientific articles (keywords, MeSh terms).

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

Verification of learning takes place in written form as part of the verification of the Integrated Course of which the discipline 'Methodology of research in the epidemiological field' is part. The final evaluation of profit will be carried out through a written test with problems; if the written exam is passed, an oral interview will be carried out.

Exam dates will be published on Aulaweb.

The exams of the integrated courses are held in the Genoese university in a single moment and the Examination Commissions, chaired by the Coordinators of the integrated courses or by their delegates, must be composed in accordance with the provisions of Article 29 c.5 and c. 6 of the University Didactic Regulations.

As per the Degree Course's Didactic Regulations, exams can only be taken in the periods dedicated to this and called exam sessions. The moments of verification usually cannot coincide with the periods in which the training activities take place.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The assessment consists of a written exam. The grade will be calculated with the weighted mathematical average by CFU of the grades of the individual modules.

Students with SLD or with other regularly certified special educational needs will be able to agree with the teacher the written or oral modality, by contacting the teachers at least 10 days before the exam. They can also take advantage of 30% additional time.
