A critical reflection on how the Italian labour market works will be developed. Two main focus: on the one hand, the role of the social construction processes of femininity and masculinity in shaping individual working lives; on the other hand, the main reforms of the Italian Labour market since the late ‘90s. AIMS AND CONTENT LEARNING OUTCOMES The class offers some tools for an analytical analysis of the main trends of the Italian labour market, with some focuses on some of its main actors (young people, women and migrants). AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES The aim is to stimulate a critical approach to the analysis of social processes that contribute to designing work biographies, as well as providing skills related to laws that regulate the labor market in which students will find themselves operating. At the end of the course students are expected to be able to recognize and deconstruct the role of cultural models and stereotypical representations in the definition of opportunities and barriers (important competence for future teachers/educators), and know the employment contracts required by current laws. The main notions relating to the history of work and production will be introduced, with particular reference to the changes that have occurred in the last thirty years. Students are expected to acquire these concepts by not only knowing how to use them correctly but also developing a critical approach. PREREQUISITES General Sociology 66880 TEACHING METHODS Frontal lessons with the aid of slides. Collective discussion will be encouraged. There will be some guests: one expert of Ligurian job market from the Agenzia Regionale per il Lavoro; another one on the working conditions of foreigners. The use of media articles and audiovisual material is foreseen. In the last lesson a pre-test will be carried out. SYLLABUS/CONTENT The course program is divided into nine macro-themes: 1. Fundamental concepts of the social division of labour and production. 2. History of labour from ancient times to Fordism. Definition and characteristics of the capitalistic production system. 3. Post-Fordism: changes in production methods and organizational models. Flexibility. 4. Neoliberalism: meaning and consequences on the organization of work. Workfare. 5. Labor market. Job insecurity. 6. Gender discrimination and gender construction in the workplaces. 7. Migrant work, with particular reference to the work of foreigners in Italy. 8. Local job market (Liguria) 9. Class schedule SOCIOLOGY OF WORK EXAMS EXAM DESCRIPTION Dates and locations of the exams will be communicated here as soon as they are available. The exam is written. The exam will consist of three parts. A report on one of the optional textbook (5-10 thousand characters including spaces). Maximum rating: 10 points. Foreign students can choose a book, agreed with the lecturer, in English, French or Spanish. Fifteen closed questions with multiple answers (three answer modes: one correct worths 1 point, the other two options without scoring penalties). Maximum rating: 15 points. An open question on the compulsory textbook. Maximum rating: 9 points. The thirtieths available will therefore be 34. Laudation, however, will only be given to those who obtain the maximum rating in all the three tests. ASSESSMENT METHODS The exam is conceived to verify the acquisition of knowledge and skills that are not only descriptive and notional, but also argumentative and critical.
