LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course aims to provide basic concepts for a sociological reading of educational processes, not only within school systems but also outside of them, presenting the main topics covered in the Sociology of Education. Particular attention will be given to the processes of socialization within the different family forms, to socialization among peers and to the presence of second generations of immigrants in educational contexts

    The goal is to provide the students with the basic tools and knowledges for a sociological understanding of the educational processes (inside and outside school sistem), developing the critical mind and the ability to analyze the social context  beyond prejudices and stereotyp

TEACHING METHODS

The lessons will be provided in modules, focusing each the main course’s themes; experts will be invited to take part to each module. During the lessons, the students will work on the course materials uploaded on aulaweb by the teacher and in working groups.Various methods will be used: brainstorming, role play, group discussions, work caffè. Videos and images produced by the visual sociology laboratory (DISFOR)  will be exploited as well.

Foreign students must contact the teacher in person before the exam.

Students with DSA (Specific Learning Disorders) disabilities or other special educational needs have to contact the teacher (e-mail: f.lagomarsino@unige.it) that will inform foreign students on how to access dedicated pathways and services.

Requests should be sent at least 10 days before the date of the call in order to allow the teacher(s) to evaluate the content. In particular, in the case of intending to make use of concept maps for the exam (which must be much more concise than the maps used for study) if the submission does not meet the deadline there will not be the technical time needed to make any changes, which may be requested by the lecturer.

Different macro -argumetns will be developed: the sociological study of educational processes; socialization and identity;  the agents of socialization ; inequalities in education processes;  changes about family in the  XIX, XX century;  migration processes and education system

There is no distinction between attending and non-attending students, however the activities carried out in the classroom are an integral part of the program and active participation is part of the ongoing formative assessment and contributes to the final assessment.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

Final oral interview and some exercises durign the lessons. 

The final oral exam with open questions, in which the student will have to demonstrate knowledge of clear theoretical references and precise concepts on the foundations of the sociology of education and on the different topics covered during the course. In addition, competence in the specific use of disciplinary terminology used to analyze educational phenomena will be assessed
