OVERVIEW

The course is aimed at understanding the cardiopulmonary mechanisms limiting motor activity in the main diseases of the respiratory system.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

Provide basic knowledge on the structure and function of the respiratory system, with particular reference to respiratory function in rest conditions and during physical activity.

Provide basic knowledge about the clinic of respiratory diseases, with particular reference to those limiting physical activity and sports performance.

Teach students to recognize the main signs and symptoms of respiratory diseases.

Inform students about instrumental diagnostic techniques of the respiratory system.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

Structure and function of the respiratory system: upper and lower airways, lung, respiratory muscles, pulmonary ventilation, pulmonary perfusion.

Semeiotics of the respiratory system: dyspnea, cough, cyanosis, physical examination.

Instrumental tests: spirometry, lung volumes, blood gas analysis.

Obstructive and restrictive anomalies.

Gas exchange and respiratory failure.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: diagnosis, hints of drug therapy and rehabilitation.

Bronchial asthma: diagnosis and treatment.

Pulmonary fibrosis.

Neuromuscular abnormalities in the body.
