As is well known, many of the properties of matter take on a peculiar behavior when it is confined to nanometer dimensions. Nowadays there is great interest in this field of research because the technological spin-offs, which are already partially applied in many commercial products, affect almost all areas, from energy to mechanical AIMS AND CONTENT LEARNING OUTCOMES Knowledge of the main experimental techniques specific to the field. Reading and deepening of a scientific article. Introduction to a multidisciplinary experimental approach AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES By the end of the course, the student must have gained autonomy in critically reading a scientific article, understanding its modeling and experimental parts. He or she must also be able to expound an argument clearly and comprehensively. Considering the topics covered, the teaching is suitable for the professional profile choice "Materials Scientist:research specialist" TEACHING METHODS Classroom lectures. Visits to laboratories working in the field of nanotechnology. SYLLABUS/CONTENT The first part of the course is focused on exposing the main experimental techniques used in the field of nanotechnology (STM, AFM, X-ray ...) In the second part, some in-depth topics are presented, with particular regard to biomimetic aspects: lotus effect, geko effect, spider silk ... RECOMMENDED READING/BIBLIOGRAPHY For each topic, one or more research articles are provided that form the basis for personal in-depth study TEACHERS AND EXAM BOARD CORRADO BORAGNO Ricevimento: Reception hours are free by phone or email appointment. The topic can be chosen from those presented during the lectures but can also be independently decided by the student, as long as it is a topic related to the course. Based on this presentation, the lecturer may ask questions on related topics. ASSESSMENT METHODS The oral examination is always conducted by the teacher in charge and another subject matter expert (usually a tenured faculty member) and lasts between about 20 and about 40 minutes. Grading is determined by the student's level of understanding of the chosen topic, ability to answer questions related to the topic, and clarity of exposition Exam schedule Data appello Orario Luogo Degree type Note 14/02/2025 09:00 GENOVA Esame su appuntamento 29/07/2025 09:00 GENOVA Esame su appuntamento 12/09/2025 09:00 GENOVA Esame su appuntamento FURTHER INFORMATION Students who have valid certification of physical or learning disabilities on file with the University and who wish to discuss possible accommodations or other circumstances regarding lectures, coursework and exams, should speak both with the instructor and with Professor Sergio Di Domizio (sergio.didomizio@unige.it), the Department’s disability liaison.
