Lessons are held in Italian AIMS AND CONTENT LEARNING OUTCOMES The teaching of "Diagnostic Methods for Archeology" aims to provide the chemical-physical tools necessary for the characterization and diagnostics of the various materials making up archaeological sites and finds in order to improve knowledge, enhancement, fruition and conservation. AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES There is a growing and widespread recognition of the importance of chemical and chemical-physical investigations in the study of works of art and of archaeological origin in general as well as in the various restoration and conservation, enhancement and use operations. The course aims to provide students with the scientific methodologies indispensable in the study of the historical, artistic and archaeological heritage. At the end of the course, the student will have developed knowledge on diagnostic technologies for the study of archaeological materials and will be able to identify the most appropriate investigation techniques based on the cases studied; will have understood the link between the diagnostic procedure and the materials for their enhancement and conservation. TEACHING METHODS The course consists of lectures and a part of exercises that may consist of addressing practical-problems with experts SYLLABUS/CONTENT General principles of chemistry, physics, thermodynamics and optics for the use of analytical and diagnostic instrumentation such as thermal analysis, analysis in optical and electron microscopy, spectroscopic and x-ray diffraction techniques. Procedures for accessing large scale facilities such as Synchrotron and Neutron Diffraction for specific diagnostic investigations. RECOMMENDED READING/BIBLIOGRAPHY Students are not given a basic reference text because the topics covered in the course can be reported in various texts. The Examination Commission is made up of two tenured teachers, including the head of teaching. The verification of the achievement of the educational objectives of a course verifies a) the acquisition, by the candidate, of the notions (at least the minimum ones) fundamental for a correct knowledge of the topics included in the program, b) the candidate's ability to move rationally in the '' field of the subject, also through appropriate links between different topics, and c) the candidate's ability to appropriately use notions and preliminary knowledge acquired previously (by passing exams of normally formally preparatory courses) in understanding and discussing the various topics of the matter. ASSESSMENT METHODS Details on how to prepare for the exam and the degree of depth of each topic are provided during the lessons. The assessment of the understanding of the topics covered and the preparation of the student for passing the exam takes place through the active participation of the student in the exercises carried out in the classroom and through an oral test carried out in part in seminar form on a topic agreed with the teacher and partly in traditional form on the topics covered during the lectures; this part has the purpose of evaluating not only if the student has reached an adequate level of knowledge, but if he has acquired the ability to critically analyze an environmental problem such as those that have been proposed in the lectures.
