OVERVIEW

Romance Philology encompasses studies on the origins and development of Neo-Latin languages and literatures with special regard to the medieval centuries, also evaluated with the use of philological and linguistic methodologies and with special attention to comparative aspects.

Knowledge of the specific character of the medieval romance literature and of its principals genres, through a direct contact with the original texts.

PREREQUISITES

Perfect mastering of the spoken and written Italian language (for foreign students) and its register varieties (for Italian-speaking students); ability to individual study; exercise in understanding critical literature.

Fundamental notions on medieval history, linguistics, literary criticism, classical civilization.

TEACHING METHODS

Dialogue frontal lessons. Individual and / or small group exercises where possible. Use of media where consistent with the topics developed in the class.

The e-mail should specify: the name of the teaching; the date of the call; the student's last name, first name and roll number; the compensatory tools and dispensatory measures deemed functional; and required.  The contact person will confirm to the lecturer that the applicant is entitled to apply for adaptations in the examination and that these adaptations must be agreed upon with the lecturer. The lecturer will respond by informing whether the requested adaptations can be used. Requests should be sent at least 10 days before the date of the call in order to allow the lecturer(s) to evaluate the content. In particular, in case you intend to make use of maps conceptual maps for the exam (which must be much more concise than the maps used for studying) if the submission does not meet the deadline there will not be the technical time needed to make any changes.
 

 

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

Introduction to the philology and interpretation of medieval literary texts, their linguistic form and cultural traditions.
Topics covered : the production, transmission, circulation and reception of the vernacular text; beast fables & beast epic in medieval literature.

Languages, in addition to Italian, that can be used for teaching activities : Latin, Old French, Old Provençal (for sources); French, English, German (for critical literature)

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The exam takes the form of an oral interview.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The student at the exam is asked questions about the course contents to ascertain the knowledge reached, the ability to expose with linguistic appropriateness and argumentative consistency, methodological mastery and sure critical orientation.

Attending students will study texts as indicated in 6 or 9 CFU program, as well as the topics and literary works covered in the lessons (see bibliography).

Non-attending students will study (in any case by agreement with the teacher), in addition to texts as indicated in 6 or 9 CFU program, two literary works of choice (from a list provided separately) .

Special cases: students with curricula other than  literature (mod.) or who in any case insert the course among those free according to the study plan (for 6 or 9 credits) can agree with the teacher on a program adapted to their specific educational interests.
