Moreover, the Internet architecture is presented and the main characteristics of audio/video signals are discussed in order to motivate the opportunity and convenience of a suitable coding able to reduce information redundancy. Eventually, the principal products for multimedia streaming are shortly illustrated. AIMS AND CONTENT LEARNING OUTCOMES The module is aimed at providing the basics of modern telecommunication networks and some knowledge on the coding techniques currently used to produce and distribute multimedia contents. The module also deals with the architecture of the Internet and describes the main characteristics of audio/video signals in order to motivate the opportunity and convenience of a suitable coding able to reduce information redundancy. Finally, the principal products for web streaming are presented. AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES Attendance, active participation to lectures, and individual study will allow students - to appreciate the actual advantages deriving from the modern telecommunication and computer networks; - to understand the structure of the Internet and its main services; - to know the main characteristics of audio/video signals and of most sutable codecs; - to know the principal techniques for audio/video podcasting/streaming. SYLLABUS/CONTENT Data transmission networks: history of packet switching; from the mainframe networks to the Internet. Internet organization, services, and protocols. Classification of networks: public and private networks, LAN, MAN, and WAN. Internet architecture and relevance of internetworking. Addressing Scheme in the Internet: advantages and drawbacks of a hierarchical addressing. Evoltution of the Internet Protocol (IP). Virtual Private Networks. Domain Name System. Examples of domain names. Multimedia systems. Analog-to-digital conversion. Quantization errors. Coding of audio/video signals. Advantages of coding and principal coding techniques currently used. The aim is to evalute the degree of learning, autonomy, reasoning skills achived by the student.
