AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Learn what the main neurophysiological study methods consist of, with particular reference to learning the technique, basic knowledge of the equipment and their correct maintenance, the methods of carrying out diagnostic tests, clinical indications, logistical-organizational aspects and uses in the field of scientific research.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

For students coming from the three-year degree course of "Neurophysiopathology techniques" (currently not active at the University of Genoa) the course aims to consolidate knowledge already learned. For students from other three-year degree courses, the course aims to learn what the main methods of neurophysiological study consist of, with particular reference to learning the technique, basic knowledge of equipment and their correct maintenance, execution of diagnostic tests, clinical indications, logistical-organizational aspects and uses in the field of scientific research.

TEACHING METHODS

Joint lectures held by the neurologist and the technician.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

The 16 hours of lessons will be divided into 8 blocks of 2 hours, the first held by the course teacher and the second by a neurophysiopathology technician, subject to verification of his/her availability. The 8 blocks will cover the following topics:

1) Principles of the EEG signal - patient preparation, artifact management
2) EEG in the epileptic patient - examples of tracings, activation maneuvers, seizure management
3) EEG in the comatose patient, prognostic evaluation, vegetative state - EEG recording at the bedside/resuscitation context and assessment of brain death
4) Visual and acoustic evoked potentials - ERG-PEV-BAER recording techniques
5) Motor and somatosensory evoked potentials - PEM-SEP recording techniques
6) Electromyography, conduction velocity, neuromuscular junction study - Examples of ENG-EMG tracings
7) Study of the autonomic nervous system, nociceptive pathways and event-related responses - The polysomnographic examination
8) Intraoperative monitoring and basics of neuromodulation - Preparation of the patient in the operating room and monitoring

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The first examination after the end of the course will consist of a written exam with 16 multiple choice questions (4 answers of which 1 is correct), evaluated 2 points for each answer without penalty in case of wrong answer. The vote will result from the sum of the points. In the event that all the answers are correct, praise will be obtained.

Examinations following the first will be oral.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The verification of learning takes place through the final exam only, which aims to ascertain the effective acquisition by the student of the expected learning outcomes.

In the case of a written exam, 16 multiple choice questions will be proposed. Each correct answer will be worth 2 points, so to pass the exam it is necessary to answer 9 questions correctly (score 18), while answering all the questions correctly will get 30 cum laude.

In the case of an oral exam, in order to pass the exam, thus obtaining a mark of no less than 18/30, the student must demonstrate knowledge of the main neurophysiological study methods, with particular reference to learning the technique, the basic knowledge of equipment and their correct maintenance, methods of carrying out diagnostic tests, clinical indications, logistical-organisational aspects and uses in the field of scientific research.
Contribute to the final grade expressed out of thirty:
- Ability to treat the required topics in a transversal and critical manner;
- Correctness, clarity, synthesis and presentation fluidity;
- Mastery of the subject;
- Adoption of appropriate terminology.
The mark of 30/30 with possible honors will be awarded when the knowledge/skills in the subject are excellent.

It is emphasized that if the minimum objectives of the course are not achieved, the student will not pass the exam.
