Particular emphasis is placed on understanding the usefulness and limitations associated with the use of schematizations and models, and on acquiring the ability to solve simple numerical problems. AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES The class provides the basic concepts and the laws of mechanics. Particular importance is attributed to the understanding of the effectiveness of the use of schematizations and models, and to the ability to solve simple numerical problems. More in detail: The student will acquire the skills in the approximate calculation, in the dimensional analysis, in the conversion between different units of measurement. Will learn to know the vector quantities and to give a representation through a coordinate system; will be able to perform simple vector calculation exercises Will learn the schematization of physical problems by subdividing the system under examination into several subsystems and identifying the applied forces. Will know the laws of mechanics and the concept of conservation of mechanical energy. Will be able to understand the concept of conservation of impulse and momentum and to apply it to simple physical systems. TEACHING METHODS Lectures on blackboard with power point slides projection where necessary. Exercises with the tutor and with the teacher SYLLABUS/CONTENT Scientific method, experimental uncertainties, dimensional analysis and units of measurement. Reference systems and vector, differential and integral calculation elements. Kinematics of the material point: position, displacement, velocity, acceleration. Radial and tangential acceleration. Uniformly accelerated motion, circular motion, harmonic motion. Principles of the dynamics of the material point: forces, inertial systems, non-inertial and apparent forces (brief remarks); force weight, friction forces; elastic forces, gravitational force (brief remark) Work of a force, kinetic energy and power; conservative forces and potential energy. Impulse and momentum; angular momentum and momentum of a force; System of material points laws of conservation of momentum and angular momentum; center of mass and its motion; applications with elastic and inelastic collisions. Rigid body: rotation around a fixed axis; moment of inertia; rolling motion. RECOMMENDED READING/BIBLIOGRAPHY A copy of the slides presented in class with all the topics covered is uploaded to Aulaweb. This material is not considered exhaustive for the preparation of the exam, but allows you to follow in detail the topics presented in class. Various texts cover the teaching material, some are listed in the following: P. Mazzoldi, M. Nigro, C. Voci Elementi di Fisica - Meccanica e Termodinamica EdiSES D. Halliday, R. Resnick, K. S. Oral exam: 1. students who obtain in the two partial tests during the course, or at the exam sessions, an average of 15/30, with a minimum of 12/30 in each test are admitted to the oral exam. 2. The oral examination consists of an interview concerning the mechanical part and the electromagnetism part. Should one of the two interviews be considered insufficient, the oral exam will be considered as globally invalid and the student will have to repeat it in full (the written tests will still be held valid). ASSESSMENT METHODS The written exam will evaluate the ability to: i) interpret the text of the proposed exercise and outline the problem; ii) identify the physical laws involved and the related equations to be applied; iii) quantitatively resolve the exercise; iv) evaluate the reasonableness of the numerical result obtained. In order to evaluate the written test, the following parameters will be taken into account: the correct setting of the exercise, the correctness of the literal solution obtained, the congruence of the numerical solution obtained. The oral exam will allow to ascertain the ability to: i) introduce the requested topic with language properties; ii) describe simple applications of the physical laws under consideration. In order to evaluate the oral exam, the following parameters will be taken into account: the level of understanding of the topic, the quality of the presentation, the correct use of the specialist vocabulary, the capacity for critical reasoning.
