CODE 101146 ACADEMIC YEAR 2024/2025 CREDITS 6 cfu anno 2 MARITIME SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY 10948 (L-28) - GENOVA SCIENTIFIC DISCIPLINARY SECTOR ING-INF/03 LANGUAGE English TEACHING LOCATION GENOVA SEMESTER 1° Semester TEACHING MATERIALS AULAWEB OVERVIEW The lessons are intended to provide basic knowledge on the telecommunication technologies commonly employed on board. In particular, the main technologies relating to signals (both analog and digital), antennas, global positioning systems and satellite communication will be introduced and described. In addition, technologies related to the world of telecommunications networks, modernly used by ships but not limited to, will also be covered. AIMS AND CONTENT LEARNING OUTCOMES The teaching unit aims at introducing the basics of telecommunications, from signals (sampling, modulation, frequency analysis) to computer networks (transmission media and network protocols). At the end of the teaching unit, emphasis will be given to some of the main telecommunication systems usually present onboard by analysing the technology behind RADAR, SONAR and GPS. AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES The student who has successfully followed the Telecommunications course will be able to: understand the main fundamental theoretical concepts behind telecommunications (TLC) interact with some simple TLC systems (e.g., computer networks) understand and solve communication-related issues use her/his knowledge to follow more in-depth and/or specialized TLC courses and teachings. PREREQUISITES Basic knowledge of mathematics, geometry and physics. TEACHING METHODS Frontal lessons through slides. Occasionally the blackboard could also be used. Working students and students with certified SLD (Specific Learning Disorders), disability or other special educational needs are advised to contact the teacher at the beginning of the course to agree on teaching and examination arrangements so to take into account individual learning patterns, while respecting the teaching objectives. SYLLABUS/CONTENT Signal theory (analog & digital) Linear and Time Invariant Systems (LTI) Fundamentals of communication systems Introduction to TLC networks Radio and satellite systems.
