The "Leadership & Teamworking" teaching unit aims to expose students to the basic concepts and tools through which they come to identify strategies for regulating their organizational behaviors according to the roles held and the objectives assigned. AIMS AND CONTENT LEARNING OUTCOMES Ability to apply task and workload management. Shipboard personnel management. International conventions. Decision making techniques. AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES The teaching unit aims to provide students with the fundamental concepts and tools for exercising leadership and an effective teamwork, in particular declined in the context of maritime on-board teamwork. At the end of the teaching unit, the student will be able to recognize the fundamental variables of behavior in organized contexts, such as on-board work environments, starting from the behaviors and results "desirable" for the organization, and to recognize the main areas that influence these behaviors and results (at different levels, individual, group and organizational). S/he will therefore be able to independently manage her/himself and the other people with whom s/he interfaces, suggesting decisions and actions aimed at improving group and organizational performance, and individual well-being in work contexts. Theoretical knowledge is provided to develop the skills required by Functions 1,2,3,4 of Table A-III/1 and A-III/2 of the STCW Convention (marine engineer), Functions 1,2,3 of Table A-II/1 and A-II/2 of the STCW Convention (deck officer), Functions 1,2,3 of Table A-III/6 of the STCW Convention (electrotechnical officer). Students will acquire personal and social competences (see also section "Teaching methods"). PREREQUISITES No specific prerequisites. TEACHING METHODS The teaching method will be interactive and engaging in order to create for students a real experiential learning setting. Videos such as TEDs talks and business cases will be used to ignite class discussion. Role-models, incidents and takeaways complete the learning environment. Working students and students with certified SLD (Specific Learning Disorders), disability or other special educational needs are advised to contact the teacher at the beginning of the teaching unit to agree on teaching and examination arrangements so to take into account individual learning patterns, while respecting the teaching objectives. SYLLABUS/CONTENT The main topics are: • Power and leadership • Self-management skills and people management skills • Organizational culture and cultural diversity; cross-cultural management • The role of personality, values and individual identity in teamwork • Perception and decision-making processes in teamwork • Individual and group motivation • Further team work dynamics: communication, roles, cohesion, conflicts and negotiation • The life cycle of groups RECOMMENDED READING/BIBLIOGRAPHY The textbook is Robbins-Judge, Organizational Behavior (Global edition, Pearson, 2018. After reading a short real or fictional case, students are requested to write a short essay applying the concepts seen in class. It takes place in presence, except for exceptions determined by special and documented work needs. ASSESSMENT METHODS For all students, the final written exam is aimed at ascertaining the ability to apply the concepts and tools provided in class. Students are advised to attend, given the presence of different activities that, session by session, lead to immediately apply the concepts and use the tools, and to sediment them as applied knowledge.
