OVERVIEW

The correct sustainable management  of the coastal and offshore marine environment requires the use of monitoring and data management tools referring to the current environmental legislation  aimed at the exercise of the activity of supervision, control and management (International conventions and protocols , European, National and local directives)

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Study of the coastal and offshore marine environment in relation to the various International conventions, European, national and local directives. Study of the instrumentation and methods of analysis necessary to tackle the monitoring of the marine environment. Analysis of national monitoring programs and methods of data treatment.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES


The attendance and participation in the planned activities (lectures and  laboratory) will allow the student to acquire the general knowledge in oceanography, in the field of monitoring, and in data management necessary to examine environmental problems, to support the activities of assessment, planning, elaboration and application of procedures for risk prevention and for the management and protection of the marine environment and human health.

TEACHING METHODS

The teaching consists of lectures and laboratory activities. As activities are planned for the application of the acquired knowledge, practical and methodological activities, attendance at lectures and laboratory exercises is strongly recommended.
Lectures in the classroom are delivered through multimedia presentations.                        
Laboratory exercises aim to apply the theoretical knowledge aquired during the lectures in the classroom.
The lab activities  take place in specific classrooms of the DISTAV.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

The course syllabus includes a presentation of the main physical, chemical and biological components of the marine environment and then an analysis of the monitoring activities in the coastal and offshore marine environment in relation to the various international, European, national and local directives. The study of instrumentation, new technologies, and the methods of analysis used in the field of marine monitoring. Analysis of data processing methods and information systems in the context of active national and international marine environmental monitoring programs. Laboratory activities and sea trials of monitoring systems.

All slides used during the lessons and the other educational material will be available at the end of each cycle of lectures / laboratory exercises along with other bibliographic material in pdf format.

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The exam consists of a written test. The written test (open and multiple-choice test) is related to the topics and practical activities carried out during the lessons and laboratory exercises.
Two exam dates will be available in the winter session (January-February) and four in the summer session (June, July, September).

ASSESSMENT METHODS

 Details on how to prepare for the exam and the degree of detail required for each topic will be provided at the beginning of the course and confirmed during lectures and exercises.
The student must be able to integrate the knowledge acquired during the lectures with the skills acquired during the workshop activities in specific cases treated during the course.
