TEACHING MATERIALS AULAWEB

OVERVIEW

The course Mathematics is intended to provide students with basic mathematics methods for practical solutions of problems. It is aimed at both students of Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Technology, and students of Biotechnology. Lectures will be held according to traditional teaching methods. The examination will consist of a written and an oral test.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Aim: to provide basic mathematical tools suitable to model and solve problems

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

Aims

The main objective of the course is to provide a basic mathematical knowledge in the field of calculus, linear algebra and, for CTF students only, vectors and analytic geometry. Specifically, the course aims to:

1) Provide basic and methodological tools aimed at understanding, setting and solving problems.
2) Address a scientific approach to the study.

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student is expected to reach the ability to:

1) understand the text of an exercise / problem
2) set up solutions through suitable tools
3) solve exercises / problems in a reasoned, autonomous way
4) show results and conclusions clearly
5) develop reasoning in a scientific way rather than acquiring technical tools.

PREREQUISITES

Logical skills and basic mathematics knowledge as provided in the high school.

TEACHING METHODS

Lectures will be held in presence within the capacity limits of the classrooms, alternating between theory and exercise classes. Part of the lectures will be held jointly for the two degree programs; part will be held separately. The lectures will be held in Italian for a total of about 64 hours for Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Technology and about 56 for Biotechnology. Please refer to the teaching-specific AulaWeb instance for any updates.

Any Student with documented Specific Learning Disorders (SLD), or with any special needs, shall reach out to the Lecturer(s) and to the dedicated SLD Representative in the Department ( Prof. Luca Raiteri, Luca.Raiteri@unige.it ) before class begins, in order to liaise and arrange the specific learning methods and ensure proper achievement of the learning aims and outcomes. VERY IMPORTANT: any request for compensatory tools and adaptations in the exam MUST be done within 10 working days before the date of the exam according to the instructions that can be found at https://unige.it/disabilita-dsa/comunicazioni

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The exam consists of a written part, with possible oral in some cases. The details will be communicated on Aulaweb.

Students with DSA certification ("specific learning disabilities"), disability or other special educational needs are advised to contact the teacher at the beginning of the course to agree on teaching and examination methods that, in compliance with the teaching objectives, take account of individual learning arrangements and provide appropriate compensatory tools.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

In the exam, we make sure that the student has acquired the required skills, and knows how to use and express them in correct terms. In particular, we will evaluate the ability to solve exercises relating to the main topics covered in the course, with adequate explanations on the procedure and a clearly expressed conclusion.
