CODE 66066 ACADEMIC YEAR 2024/2025 CREDITS 6 cfu anno 1 INGEGNERIA MECCANICA - ENERGIA E AERONAUTICA 9270 (LM-33) - GENOVA SCIENTIFIC DISCIPLINARY SECTOR ING-IND/09 LANGUAGE Italian TEACHING LOCATION GENOVA SEMESTER 1° Semester MODULES Questo insegnamento è un modulo di: GASDYNAMICS AND POWER PLANTS TEACHING MATERIALS AULAWEB OVERVIEW The module focuses on the study of power plants for energy production, in particular the ones based on the gas turbine technology and natural gas combined cycles, analysing their performance, also in off-design conditions, in the actual Italian energy scenario. AIMS AND CONTENT LEARNING OUTCOMES The main goal of this course is the presentation of the gas turbine technology and related cycles. In particular attention will be posed on advanced gas turbine cycles, combined cycles, mixed cycles with particular emphasis on design and off-design operations. Some thermoeconomic aspects will be investigated taking into account the economic scenario of the energy market. For gas turbines detailed investigation of blade cooling design and influence on the whole cycle are presented. Also combustors operation and related environmental impacts are presented and discussed, including the emission reduction techniques used in land based gas turbine cycles. Some considerations on low BTU gas utilization are considered in the course. AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES At the end of the course, the student will be able to: - know the operating principles of the power plants in the current European and Italian energy scenarios. - explain the off-design performance of power plants and gas turbines. - analyse the performance of combined cycle plants, including cogenerative ones, referring to the different energy markets. - evaluate the main critical aspects in the start-up and management of combined cycle power plants. TEACHING METHODS The corse is based on lectures; Seminar by industrial sector expert are organized within the course. Students who have valid certification of physical or learning disabilities on file with the University and who wish to discuss possible accommodations or other circumstances regarding lectures, coursework and exams, should speak both with the instructor and with Professor Federico Scarpa (federico.scarpa@unige.it), the Polytechnic School's disability liaison. SYLLABUS/CONTENT - The electrical system in Italy: main players, production, transmission, distribution and consume of electrical energy. Italian electrical system evolution. - electricity markets in Italy: creation of the electrical market, market typologies, price determination mechanisms. Day Ahead Market (MGP), Intra-day Market (MI) and Market for Despatchment Services (MSD). - Combustion chambers: emissions and control. - Blade cooling and TIT limits, blade cooling flow rate calculation. - Combined Cycles: heat recovery steam generator; one, two three pressure levels HRSG with or without re-heating; HRSG once through solution; post-combustion; combined cycle control using IGV and constant TOT; flexible operation of combined cycle. Mixed steam-gas cycles: STIG and Cheng cycles; HAT cycle; advanced mixed cycles. - Off-design operation of single and two shaft gas turbine based cycles; start up and shut down of gas turbine plants. - High Efficiency Cogeneration and application to gas turbines and combined cycles. - Seminars: • Ing.
