OVERVIEW

The module will provide students with the necessary background to analyze energy conversion and utilization systems with an holistic approach. Specific attention will be dedicated to the tecno-economic assessment of energy projects and models for energy-demand analysis, based on the development of specific case studies with the support of programming softwares (e.g., Excel, Python).

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course aims to provide students with: •Fundamentals of energy markets •Techniques for the decomposition of energy consumption •Methodologies for energy demand forecasting •Development of complex thermo-economics models •Development of energy planning models

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The Course of Energy Management will provide students with an holistic approach for a correct planning and management of energy systems. To this aim the following macro-topics will be addressed:

•Fundamentals of investment analysis

•Development of tecno-economic models.

•Methodologies for energy demand analysis

•Energy security assessment

•Fundmaentals of energy markets

Calculation software (e.g. MsExcel, Python, etc.) will be employed for the development of quantitative analysis. The course will be based on a practical approach by means of the analysis of real world case studies introduced by the lecturer and, possibly, by external guests from foreign universities and from industry.

On the successfull completion of the course, the student will be able to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge and comprehension of complex problems related to energy conversion plants and energy infrastructures
  • Develop thermo-economics calculation models
  • Propose solutions for the implementation of energy projects
  • Evaluate and compare the feasibility of projects related to energy conversion plants or energy infrastructures
  • Participate in classroom discussion with lecturers and other students

PREREQUISITES

Bachelor level knowledge of thermodynamics and heat transfer

TEACHING METHODS

Frontal lectures and practical exercises with support of calculation software (e.g. Excel, Python, etc.)

Students who have valid certification of physical or learning disabilities on file with the University and who wish to discuss possible accommodations or other circumstances regarding lectures, coursework and exams, should speak both with the instructor and with Professor Federico Scarpa (federico.scarpa@unige.it), the Polytechnic School's disability liaison.
