OVERVIEW

The course provides the fundamental notions related to the behavior of fluids at rest and in motion. The design and verification of simple hydraulic systems and the design of real plants limited to simple static schemes are also addressed.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course provides the fundamentals of the motion of fluid currents and the tools for the design and verification of simple hydraulic systems and to address more complex problems in a global form

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course provides the fundamentals of the motion of fluid currents and the tools for the design and verification of simple hydraulic systems. In detail, it deals with the following topics: forces acting in a fluid at rest, the thrusts exerted by a fluid on flat and bumpy surfaces, the tension in a moving fluid and the principles that regulate the movement of a fluid current. On the basis of the topics discussed, exercises on the thrusts exerted by fluids and problems relating to simple systems are proposed.

Among the transversal skills we intend to develop functional alphabetic competence (basic level - ability to communicate effectively in written and oral form, adaptation of one's communication to the context, use of sources and aids of various kinds); personal competence (basic level - ability to identify one's own abilities, ability to concentrate and critically reflect on a task); the ability to learn to learn (basic level - awareness of one's preferred learning strategies, organization and evaluation of personal learning according to what is understood and learned).

PREREQUISITES

In order to understand and be able to apply most of the concepts described in the course it is necessary to have the fundamental knowledge of mathematical analysis, physics and geometry.

TEACHING METHODS

Lessons and exercises; tests using Wooclap and Mirò at different moments of the course; simulation in class with the development of exercises by the students, exposure and discussion of any critical issues related to the resolution.

Working students and students with DSA certification, disabilities or other special educational needs are advised to contact the teacher at the beginning of the course to agree on teaching and exam methods which, in compliance with the teaching objectives, take into account individual learning methods.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

Fluid definition and its properties, the continuous fluid. Pressure in fluids at rest, statics cardinal equations, Fluid statics: hydrostatic force on plane and curved surfaces. Tension state in a fluid in motion, the stress tensor. Dimensional analysis and Buckingham theorem. Description of fluid motion and the principles of fluid mechanics. The stream flows: definition and characteristics. Conservation of mass and momentum in the global form. Conservation of mass and momentum of a stream. Pipe flows. EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The exam includes a written and an oral test. During the course there are tests which allow, if passed, direct access to the oral test.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The written test will evaluate the ability to solve exercises on thrusts exerted by fluids and problems relating to simple systems. The oral exam will allow you to verify your understanding of the fundamental principles relating to the forces acting in a fluid at rest and the motion of fluid currents.

The student's ability to summarize, the ability to draw conclusions and communication skills will also be verified.
