AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES The learning outcomes of the course refer to the capacity of: understanding the main features of the system dynamics knowing the formal representations of continuous-time linear time-invariant dynamic systems knowing the main properties of continuous-time linear time-invariant dynamic systems (stability, reachability, observability) designing simple regulators for continuous-time linear time-invariant systems (algebraic feedback, PID regulators) designing simple state observers (trivial observer, Luenberger observer) Besides these learning outcomes, the student who will actively participate to lessons and team working activities can acquire the following soft skills: social skills – basic level: capacity to manage social interactions, collaborative behaviour, constructive communication in different environments capacity of learning to learn – basic level: awareness of the preferred learning stretegies, organization and evaluation of personal learning PREREQUISITES The course prerequisites refer to the contents of the following courses: Mathematics; Physics, Geometry. TEACHING METHODS The teaching methods consist, first of all, in lessons by the teacher. Moreover, some team working activities will be organized in which the students will solve some exercises and implement some software under the supervision of the teacher. The team working activities will allow the students who will actively participate to acquire social skills (basic level) and the capacity of learning to learn (basic level). SYLLABUS/CONTENT Dynamic systems: types and representations Introduction to continuous-time linear time-invariant systems Laplace transform, inital and final value thorems Solution in input-output representation and in state-space representation Stability Reachability and observability State and output feedback State estimation with observers PID regulators Representation with block connections RECOMMENDED READING/BIBLIOGRAPHY P. During the exam, the student must present a project assigned by the teacher. Moreover, the student has to solve some numerical exercises and discuss the theoretical aspects related to such exercises. Students with learning disorders will be allowed to use specific modalities and supports that will be determined on a case-by-case basis in agreement with the delegate of the Engineering courses in the Committee for the Inclusion of Students with Disabilities. ASSESSMENT METHODS The exam aims to verify the following aspects about the knowledge of the student: - knowledge regarding the main characteristics and properties of dynamic systems and the design of simple regulators and state observers - ability to apply this knowledge to numerical examples and simple physical systems The evaluation of the exam will take into account not only the knowledge of the contents addressed in the course but also the reasoning and critical analysis skills of the student, as well as his/her capability to use a technical lexicon appropriate to the context.
