TEACHING MATERIALS AULAWEB

OVERVIEW

The course aims at providing students with the basic knowledge, according to ISO standards, for the correct interpretation, understanding and execution of technical drawings via CAD software, with particular reference to the components used in the mechanical industry (description of geometry, tolerances, processes, materials, etc.). In addition, it shows the symbolic representations of the main structural elements, providing indications for the correct selection of components.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course aims to educate students in modern methods of machine design. It also provides them with practical skills by introducing techniques and tools for the design of components.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

Course nature

Basic introduction to general industrial aspects

  • Methods of representation and orthogonal projections

  • Sections, dimensioning, micro / macro geometric tolerances

In-depth study of some particularly interesting topics for the mechanical engineer

  • bolt and welded connections

PREREQUISITES

Basic knowledge of how a computer works and of Windows® operating system.

TEACHING METHODS

1. Exercises within the classroom:

  • The exercises require the use of the CAD tool "MICROSTATION V8i", presented during the lectures.
  • Each tutorial consists in performing a graphic exercise in the classroom, assigned at the beginning of the classroom itself. The exercise solution is presented during the next lesson. All the exercises carried out in the classroom are indicated with the letter A, for a total of eight exercises (A1-A8).
  • The exercises can be downloaded directly from the course web page (www.aulaweb.unige.it).

NB The exercises carried out in classroom represent an essential part of the overall course.

2. Homework:

  • The course also comprises exercises to be independently carried out at home (similarly to the exercises carried out in the classroom). The homework solutions must be delivered prior to the exam (preferably in printed form or, alternatively, in .dgn format on a USB stick). The Exam Commission preserves the right to reject the exercise if the execution is insufficient. The homework exercises are indicated with the letter D, for a total of eight exercises (D1-D8).
  • The homework exercises can be downloaded directly from the course web page (www.aulaweb.unige.it)

NOTE: As part of the innovation learning project adopted by the Bachelor Degree Course in Mechanical Engineering, novel tools will be also used for the active learning of students. The goal is to increase students' skills via interactive, experience-based, learning methodologies (e-learning, teamwork, etc.) for enhanced student participation, using an advanced level of communication that makes the student more aware and autonomous

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The exams is divided in 2 parts:

  • A computer graphics test, where the student is expected to implement a technical drawing of a component by using the 2D CAD MICROSTATION V8i. The graphic test takes place in the computer lab (test duration: 3 hours) and the outcome of the test must be ≥ 18/30. Tests quoted with a mark between 16/30 and 18/30 are admitted “under condition”.
  • An oral test, which comprises the evaluation of the theoretical part of the course, as well as a discussion of the documents D1-D8 to be handed in before the oral test.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

Access to the graphical test

  • It is compulsory to register using the on-line tool (from the University portal - Student Services), at least 3 days before the test.
  • Given the limited capacity of the computer lab, the students will be divided in groups of 35 units maximum (one group in the morning and one in the afternoon). Therefore, when registering, each student knows which group he/she is supposed to attend: if the registration number exceeds the 35 position, the students will switch to the afternoon group.
  • If the total number of students exceeds 70 units, the exam will be carried out over two days.
  • Within the prescribed exam timing, the drawing must be printed and the .dgn file must be in the Classroom Server.
  • It is possible to bring along handouts and / or manual.
  • Results will be published on Aulaweb.
  • A negative result on the oral examination does not imply that the (eventually) positive mark on the graphical test will be lost. The positive results achieved in the graphical test are valid for the whole of Examinations Session (calendar year).
  • The final grade is the average rating of the oral and graphical exam tests.
  • Further info:
  • The files containing the A4 and A3 formats/settings for Microstation will be made available on Aulaweb.
  • It is allowed to use a personal computer. Obviously, when the solution of the graphical test is handed in, any evaluation potentially achieved in previous exam session is lost.

Access to the oral test

  • After the publication of the written test results, the students can book the oral test, using the booking tool provided on the web (aulaweb). Each enrolled student will then receive an email warning, reporting time and date of the oral test.
  • The exercises performed at home (drawings D1-D8) must be delivered during the oral exam (preferably printed or, alternatively, in .dgn format on a USB stick). The exercises performed on A3 format can be printed on A4-size sheets, by imposing a scale 1: 1.4 within the Print window of Microstation.

Note: The Exam Calendar may be subjected to slight variations due to the availability of ICT labs. Students will be promptly informed.
