OVERVIEW

The course deals with the most relevant topics relating to internal combustion engines for the automotive field, to turbomachines for energy generation and aeronautical propulsion systems and to energy conversion plants.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course presents operational and functional concepts on internal combustion engines for the automotive field, on aeronautical engines (air propulsion systems) and on energy conversion plants. Moreover, the main numerical and experimental techniques for analysis of machines and energy systems will be presented.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The student attendance during the lessons and related study activities will allow:

- to know the main features related to experimental investigations on internal combustion engines;

- to know the main features related to experimental investigations on turbocharging systems;

- to identify the main features of the turbomachines used in the different application areas;

- to know the architecture of the main types of aeronautical propulsion systems;

- to evaluate the performance of turbomachines;

- to know the basic aspects of emissions and related abatement, renewable source applications, and distributed generation (considering also cogeneration and trigeneration);

- to apply the thermodynamic knowledge to the performance calculation of energy systems (also with a software).

TEACHING METHODS

Lectures on the different items presented in the course programme and experimental activities on different test rigs, focusing on specific arguments developed within the course. Moreover, seminars offered by academic and industrial experts and technical visits can be organised.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

Experimental investigation on reciprocating Internal Combustion Engine (ICE): measuring equipment, test facility set-up, ICE installation on dynamometer test bench, evaluation of engine performance, fuel consumption, ICE pollutant emissions. Experimental definition of automotive turbocharger performance.

Turbomachines for energy and aeronautical propulsion - Types of turbomachines and application fields. Turbomachines for aeronautical propulsion: the architecture of the main propulsion systems (turbojet, turbofan and turboprop). Performance parameters of a turbomachine; loss sources and correlations. Experimental techniques and facilities for the study of flow in turbomachines. 4-hole pneumatic probe: calibration and use for measuring the profile losses of a cascade.

Error theory applied to energy systems. Measurement techniques and instrumentation used in energy plants. Environmental impact of energy systems and measurement of pollutants from combustion systems. Trigeneration systems with microturbines and heat pumps: theory, practical exercise, processing of acquired data. Calculation of thermodynamic balances and performance parameters of energy systems with the W-TEMP software.

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

Examination: oral test.

Students who have valid certification of physical or learning disabilities on file with the University and who wish to discuss possible accommodations or other circumstances regarding lectures, coursework and exams, should speak both with the instructor and with Professor Federico Scarpa (federico.scarpa@unige.it), the Polytechnic School's disability liaison.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The oral examination will be focused on the topics treated during the lessons and will be aimed at evaluating not only the fulfilment of an adequate knowledge level, but also the acquisition of critical analysis skills on the topics of the exam.
