OVERVIEW

The course has the objective of providing the essential tools for analysis and optimization of power and energy systems. To this end, various methodological approaches will be introduced and discussed. The effectiveness of such approaches will be demonstrated via software exercises carried out in connection with simple case studies.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

To provide the essential methodological tools for the statement and the solution of optimization problems relevant to power and energy systems.

To provide an introduction to widespread and flexible software tools (such as, for instance, LINGO and MATLAB) for the solution of optimization.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The objective of the course is that of providing the essential methodological tools necessary for the statement and the solution of optimization problems of power and energy systems. Besides, software tools like MATLAB and LINGO will be introduced and used, during the course, for the solution of the considered problems. At the end of the course, the sudents will be able to optimize power and energy systems as dynamic models.

The transversal skills on which we intend to focus are:

- personal competence

- social competence

-  ability to learn to learn proficiency in project creation

- expertise in project management

PREREQUISITES

Mathematical analysis (standard level). Basic knowledge of system theory. Electrical systems models.

TEACHING METHODS

The course includes lectures, seminars and computer exercises. In particular, as regards transversal skills, exercises (on and off the computer) will be carried out in the classroom, encouraging work in different groups in order to promote personal and social skills and project development. Small projects will also be assigned to develop and present.

Working students and students with DSA, disability or other special educational needs certification are advised to contact the teacher at the beginning of the course to agree on teaching and exam methods which, in compliance with the teaching objectives, take into account individual ways of learning

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

The course includes various topics useful for the management of power and energy systems: methodological aspects for the formalization of optimization and control problems; modeling aspects of some specific application fields; software tools useful for the implementation and resolution of optimization and control problems.

In particular, the topics of the course concern:

- Linear and integer linear programming.

- Representation of dynamic systems through state equations.

- Identification and estimation based on models and data elaboration

- Optimization methods for discrete event representation.

- Optimal planning and management of power and energy systems, with particular reference to the following application areas: sustainable districts, smart grids, smart buildings, management of electric vehicle charging.

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

Oral examination, including a discussion of the reports of the computer classworks. Students should be able to formalize optimization problems.

Students with learning disorders ("Disturbi Specifici di Apprendimento", DSA) will be allowed to use specific modalities and supports that will be determined on a case-by-case basis in agreement with the delegate of the Engineering courses in the Committee for the Inclusion of Students with Disabilities

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The exam will be the objective of checking and evaluating the capability of the students to state and solve simple optimization and control problems, analogous to those presented during the lectures.
