AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The aim of the teaching is to provide students with an advanced overview of the brittle and ductile deformation of rocks. Main topics include: classification and description of faults, shear zones and folds, kynematic indicators, stress modeling, relationships between stress and strain, strain analysis, geodynamics and structures.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of the course, the students will be able to:

- know and describe the characteristics of the main structures, both in the ductile and brittle realm;

- know and discuss stress-strain relationships, both in the brittle and ductile field,

- solve simple strain analysis problems,

- interpret structures in terms of strain distribution,

- know and discuss the link between structures and geodynamic setting,

- measure planes and lines attitudes and make plots using stereographic projections,

- know and describe the principal regional geological features, with focus on the Alps-Apennines system and on the Tertiary Piedmont Basin succession.

TEACHING METHODS

The course consists of lessons (using multimedia presentations) and of laboratories in the classroom. Laboratories are about compass usage and stereographic projections.

Fieldwork is aimed at recognizing and describing some deformative structures both in the brittle and in the ductile field.

Students who have valid certification of physical or learning disabilities on file with the University and who wish to discuss possible accommodations or other circumstances regarding lectures, coursework and exams, should speak both with the instructor and with Professor Sara Ferrando (sara.ferrando@unige.it), the Department’s disability liaison.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

Stress and stress modeling, stress-strain relationships, deformation mechanisms, faults, shear zones, active and passive folding, folds classification, interference patterns, structures and geodynamic setting, strain analysis, strain distribution in structures, compass usage and stereographic projections, elements of regional geology: Western and Ligurian Alps, Northern Apennines, Tertiary Piedmont Basin succession, Pliocene deposits.

RECOMMENDED READING/BIBLIOGRAPHY

All the presentations of the course and other teaching meterial are available in Aulaweb platform from the beginning of the lessons.

GEOLOGY 2 (MODULE 1)

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The exam is integrated with the module 2. For a detailed description of the examination modalities, see the course description (Geology 2 - code 80270).

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The pratical test will verify the effective acquisition of the necessary ability for the compass usage and for the construction of stereographic projection plots.

The oral test will focus on the topics covered during the lectures, the exercises in the classroom and the fieldwork. It will aim to assess not only if the student has achieved an adequate level of knowledge, but also if he has acquired the ability to integrate the notions received from both modules. The ability to expose the arguments clearly and with correct terminology will also be evaluated.

FURTHER INFORMATION

Students with a certification of physical or learning disability filed with the University can find information on support services at the web page https://unige.it/disabilita-dsa/studenti-disturbi-specifici-apprendimento-dsa, provided by the "Services for the Inclusion of Students with Disabilities and with Learning Disorders." They can also contact Professor Sara Ferrando (sara.ferrando@unige.it), the Distav contact for disabilities.
