OVERVIEW

The integrated teaching is divided into two parts, a module of human molecular genetics of 6 CFU to be carried out in the first semester and a module of biomedical biotechnology of 6 CFU to be carried out in the second semester. The teaching aims to provide students with advanced knowledge in Human Genetics and Molecular Biology, necessary to deal with, with appropriate cultural tools, the study of modern genetics applied to the physiological and pathological conditions of the human genome and to modern biotechnologies and their applications in biomedical and industrial fields. It takes place mainly through lectures and thematic seminars. The profit test is an oral interview for each module.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The integrated teaching aims to provide students with advanced knowledge in Human Genetics and Molecular Biology, necessary to deal with, with appropriate cultural tools, the study of modern genetics applied to the physiological and pathological conditions of the human genome and to modern biotechnologies and their applications in biomedical and industrial fields.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The teaching aims to provide students with advanced knowledge in Human Molecular Genetics and Molecular Biology. The teaching of human molecular genetics concerns the organization and expression of the human genome, molecular methods for the study of gene function and therapeutic approaches for the treatment of genetic diseases.
In teaching biomedical biotechnologies, students will learn more about the main production techniques of microorganisms (prokaryotes and eukaryotes) and genetically modified organisms (invertebrates and mammals) for basic research, for the creation of animal disease models and for the production of recombinant proteins for industrial or therapeutic purposes. The principles of gene therapy and modern cellular therapies as well as the principles of 3R applied to animal experimentation and new methods of research to replace animal experimentation will also be explored.
Teaching will thus make it possible for students to know all the main methods of genetic and biotechnological research to enable the future researcher to use the appropriate means of research to solve experimental problems and to create new study models for human diseases.

TEACHING METHODS

The topics of the course will be explored in depth through lectures with extensive discussion of the topics based on scientific articles. As part of the teaching of biomedical biotechnology, educational laboratories will be set up for the in-depth study of molecular and cellular analysis techniques and, if possible, a guided visit to a laboratory/research center/biotechnological company will be organized accompanied by the teacher.

Students who have valid certification of physical or learning disabilities on file with the University and who wish to discuss possible accommodations or other circumstances regarding lectures, coursework and exams, should speak both with the instructor and with Professor Sara Ferrando (sara.ferrando@unige.it), the Department’s disability liaison.

EXAMS

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The assessment of the knowledge acquired will take place by asking the student to go into details of three topics covered during the course, with an evaluation of the level of knowledge, presentation and reasoning skills.
