OVERVIEW

The preparation of adequate experimental designs to test hypotheses in the field of biological and natural sciences is of fundamental importance to understand the responses of organisms, at every level of complexity, of populations and communities to the environment in which they live and to understand and predict changes caused by human and global changes. Mathematical modelling allows us to discover various connections between the real world and the math world, an approach necessary in a society where digital technology, fractal shapes and virtual reality are present in everyday life. Quantitative Ecology, which involves the use of advanced mathematical and statistical methodologies to manage problems/questions in the field of ecology, is a rapidly growing sector that respond to the need to deal with increasingly large and complex data sets, using the quantitative reasoning.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Acquisition of fundamental knowledge for the organization and analysis of ecological data, the structuring of an experimental design in ecology, main analysis techniques.

Students will also be introduced to the use of the software R for the creation of graphs and statistical analyses.

PREREQUISITES

There are no specific prerequisites, but basic knowledge of mathematics and statistics is useful to effectively address the teaching contents.
