OVERVIEW

The course in PORTOGHESE-LINGUAGGI SETTORIALI (Portuguese-Sectorial Languages) is intended for students in the third year of Modern Languages and Cultures, Business and Tourism Languages curriculum, and, in addition to aiming to consolidate the language skills acquired in the first two years, it aims to approach the peculiar characteristics of the sectorial languages relating to the fields of business and tourism of the Portuguese language, in its European and Brazilian variants.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course will focus on linguistic competences and translation skills for portuguese special purpose texts. The course aims to provide students with the necessary tools, through reading and translation of specialized magazines and books, to access the administrative, business and tourism sector language in Portuguese. The most significant variations between the language used in Portugal and Brazil will be highlighted.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of the course, students will have to demonstrate adequate knowledge and comprehension skills in the use of specialised languages and their lexical and morphosyntactic characteristics in the Portuguese-Italian language combination, with particular reference to business, legal-administrative and tourism language, and with a focus on translation strategies.

They will be required to be able to apply the aforementioned knowledge and comprehension skills in a way that demonstrates a professional approach and possess adequate skills to devise and support arguments as well as strategies for solving problems that normally arise in practice. They will also be required to possess the ability to collect and interpret data useful for making autonomous judgements, including reflection on related social, scientific or ethical issues; to be able to communicate information, ideas, problems and solutions to specialist and non-specialist interlocutors; to have developed those learning skills that are necessary for them to undertake subsequent studies with a high degree of autonomy.

PREREQUISITES

Portuguese language level B1/B2. Knowledge of the Portuguese language learned in the first two years.

TEACHING METHODS

Lectures, practical exercises and in itinere testing.
The various aspects of the special languages of Portuguese (European and Brazilian) concerning the business, legal-administrative and tourism aspects will be presented during the presential lessons, while at the same time reviewing the grammatical structures studied in the previous years and indispensable for acquiring a good competence in the field of study.
Finally, some examples of texts in European or Brazilian Portuguese will be proposed, of which possible translations into Italian will be analysed.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

1. Theoretical introduction to sectorial languages.
2. Portuguese in the business sector (Infrastructure and work spaces; Assignments, functions and organisational chart; Hotel infrastructure and services; Job recruitment, Curriculum Vitae, Business letter; Job interview; Placement within a company; Banking products and services; Purchase and sale operations; Import and export; Marketing).
3. Portuguese in the legal-administrative field (Contracts; Personal documents; Power of attorney documents).
4. Portuguese in the field of Tourism (Hotels and accommodation; Travel: Reservations; Tourist guides; Travel documents; Tourism and tourist agency).

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

Oral examination at the end of the course. The examination will be carried out orally and consists of an interview lasting approximately 25 minutes. 
The oral examination will focus on the course content; the candidate will be asked at least three questions for each of the topics covered, selected by the Committee.
For attending students, the tests and work carried out in itinere will also form part of the final assessment.
Non-attending students are requested to contact the teacher well in advance of the examination dates in order to agree on additional study material and/or alternative written activities, which must be handed in before the oral exam. 

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The achievement of the set learning outcomes will be assessed by verifying, in addition to the skills acquired in the sectorial languages related to the fields of business and tourism, the correct use of the specialised vocabulary and a satisfactory qualitative level in the relative exposition.         
Verifications and in itinere activities: business correspondence, curricula, translations from Portuguese into Italian of sectorial texts, preparation and presentation of projects in the business, legal-administrative and tourism fields.
