OVERVIEW

The course is composed of a theoretical module and practical exercises. The theoretical module deals with language variation in a sociolinguistic perspective.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course aims at giving students advanced knowledge and competences both in terms of tools for metalinguistic analysis and in-depth analysis of specific points. It is accompanied by practical language courses, held by native French teachers, at an advanced level.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of the course the student will be able to:

- use oral and written French at level C1;

- express knowledge about linguistic variation phenomena;

- recognize and interpret such phenomena in the context of French by using linguistic theory on variation;

- manipulate texts which present variation phenomena.

PREREQUISITES

Students will have language competences in French of level B2.

They will be able to sit for the third year exam only if they have passed the second year one. For further information, see the exams regulations on the French section page (www.lingue.unige.it).

TEACHING METHODS

For the first semester, lessons with Aulaweb and Teams, groupwork.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

The course will deal with variation phenomena in their diatopic, diastratic, diaphasic and diamesic dimensions (therefore in a synchronic perspective) within the French speaking world, with a special focus on North America.
Texts (belonging to different genres and media, such as literature, comics, film, etc.) will be analysed.

The theoretical module is accompanied by practical exercices in French (Manipulation du texte écrit – Mme Bianchini; Manipulation du texte oral, Mme Brunin). Further information is available on the web page of the French section (www.lingue.unige.it).

The programme for students who can't follow lessons and for those who are able to follow is the same.

Students who have regularly filed a certification of disability, DSA or other special educational needs are advised to contact both the contact person Prof. Sara Dickinson (sara.dickinson@unige.it) and the lecturer [or teacher] at the beginning of the course, in order to agree on teaching and examination methods that, while respecting the teaching objectives, take into account individual learning methods and provide suitable compensatory tools.

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The theoretical module exam aims at verifying the acquisition of theoretical knowledge about linguistic variation in French and the ability to apply this knowledge to the specific analysis of a text. The student will have to be able to identify and analyze the phenomena that appear in a specific text, using theoretical knowledge in an appropriate way.

The exams concerning the practical exercises aim at testing the students’ ability to understand oral and written texts, interact with other speakers, reformulate, and express articulate and complex personal opinions, at level C1 of the common European framework for languages.
