OVERVIEW

The 2nd year LM course aims to further deepen the knowledge of the Polish language so as to allow the student to reach level C1 (medium advanced) / C2 (advanced advanced).

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course aims at a final level between the C1 and the C2, consolidating the pre-requisite linguistic and cultural competences and strengthening those relating to the professional area (translation). The communicative ability will allow the student to interact and express himself with fluency; to understand literary or specialist texts of a certain complexity; to produce clear texts on complex topics of various kinds.

 

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The 2nd year LM course aims at a final level between C1 and C2, consolidating the pre-acquired linguistic-cultural skills and strengthening those relating to the professional area (translation). The communicative ability will allow the student: to have a good command of the language, such as to allow him to interact and express himself fluently; to understand literary or specialized texts of a certain complexity; to produce clear texts on complex topics of various kinds.

At the end of the Polish Language II LM course for 6 CFU, the student should acquire all the skills foreseen by the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Language Knowledge) at level B2 and some of the levels C1 and C2.
The students of the 9 CFU course will also attend the Theoretical Module, divided into two parts.

 

The theoretical module conducted by prof. Quercioli proposes to give an introduction to the terminology of translatology and to accompany the student in achieving the ability to translate a short literary text; he will also be provided with the tools to compare, where possible, different translation choices made on the same text. It will be essential to develop a critical reasoning that allows you to apply the concepts learned in the course of teaching to the concrete texts studied.

The Theoretical Module conducted by Dr. Kowalcze, on the other hand, deals in detail with some topics of Polish and Italian contrastive grammar, especially in the context of lexical derivation and semantics. Students will also know the theoretical foundations of Polish-Italian bilingualism and will analyze the most common errors due to interference with the Italian language.

Expected results

Expansion of vocabulary, syntactic knowledge, and expository skills: ability to articulate a discourse on a given topic (level between C1 and C2), with extensive use of synonyms and antonyms; knowledge of the basics of translation practice at a practical level and of some key points of theoretical research.

PREREQUISITES

The course is intended for students of the second year of Master's Degree (LM-37, 38), but it can also be followed by Erasmus students with a Polish mother tongue. Interested students are asked to contact Dr. Karolina Kowalcze to agree on a possible program adapted to their training needs.

TEACHING METHODS

Polish Language Cours (Lettorato): 80 hours of language exercises (40 in the first semester and 40 in the second semester) - for students who choose the course for 6 and 9 CFU

Theoretical Module: 30 hours of theoretical frontal lessons provided for students who choose the course for 9 CFUs. The theoretical module is divided into two parts; the first, of 12 hours, is conducted by dr. Kowalcze, the second, of 18 hours, by prof. Quercioli. 

Unless otherwise indicated due to the evolution of the health situation, the course will take place in traditional (in presence) mode.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

The Language exercises program is balanced between the study of new grammatical topics and the development of solid lexical and communicative competence. The course deals with the notions of descriptive grammar of the Polish language foreseen at level B2-C1, including all the elements of nominal, pronominal and verbal flexion. Students will also know the system of numerals and various types of lexical derivation. From the beginning of the course particular attention is paid to the interaction of students in Polish in the various communicative situations from level B2-C1. The course participants will be invited to write in a regular manner various texts whose topics will correspond to the program.


During the lessons of the theoretical module, prof. Kowalcze will address in detail some topics of Polish and Italian contrastive grammar drawn from the program of the Literature and will explain the theoretical bases of Polish-Italian bilingualism.


The part of the theoretical module of prof. Quercioli consists of classroom lectures dedicated to translation exercises, interpretation and commentary on literary texts drawn from the program of Polish Literature 2 and advanced teaching. Both autonomous translations will be produced and translations already published will be examined, and comparisons will be made between several versions of the same text. A brief introductory text to the Translations Studies will also be studied

Non-attending students may take the final examination of the course but are invited to contact the professors at the beginning of the academic year to agree on a possible programme adapted to their training needs and Polish language skills.

Prof. Quercioli: an article chosen from the volume Contemporary theories of translation, edited by Siri Nergaard (Bompiani, 1995). Other texts will be provided at the beginning of the year.

Prof. Kowalcze: The main manual for the Polish Language Course will be agreed with the students at the beginning of the academic year.

EXAM DESCRIPTION

Prof. Kowalcze: a written test of Theoretical Module and of the Language Course and an oral test, both at the end of the course. N.B. During the academic year there will be 3 intermediate tests ('in itinere'), preparatory to the written test at the end of the year.

Prof. Quercioli: oral exam, during which will be verified both the technical ability to translate a short literary text and that of arguing on the linguistic and lexical choices presented.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

Prof. Kowalcze: the final written test consists of a lexico-grammatical test, understanding of the text listened to and the text read, composition of a short text on the subject. The oral exam is based on the program and the topics covered during the course and consists of a conversation in Polish as a test of practical language learning.

Prof. Quercioli: the oral exam aims to ascertain the following aspects of student preparation: ability to present the knowledge acquired and internalized with respect to the basic concepts of the course, ie the definition of the translation activity. The ability to autonomously translate a short text and to compare, justifying them, different translation choices, will be evaluated. Course attendance and accuracy in basic terminology will be evaluated positively.

The final grade of the course includes all the partial grades, that is the vote of the written and oral exam in Literature and the grades of both parts of the theoretical module.

Unless otherwise indicated due to the evolution of the health situation, the course will take place in the traditional way (present).

Attendance is highly recommended. Non-attending students can take the final exam of the course, but are invited to contact the teacher at the beginning of the academic year to agree on a possible program adapted to their training requirement and language skills in Polish.
Students who have been certified with specific learning disabilities (SLD), such as dyslexia or dysgraphia, are invited to contact the teacher, as well as to use the various services (offices in charge, area contact persons, dedicated tutors) provided to accompany them. in the university path.
