Course on a single topic on the basis of the linguistic and literary competences acquired during the course of Romance Philology I

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course aims to give a complete picture of origins, structure and evolution of medieval romance languages, to increase the knowledge of the medieval romance literatures by reading vernacular texts, to provide the students with competences about the comparative study of medieval works and about textual criticism.

1 – the ability to read literary medieval texts in their original language,

2 – the ability to contextualize medieval works in the socioeconomical landscape in which they are written.

3  – the ability to do ado a full linguistic and rhetorical analysis on medieval texts.

To have passed the exam of Filologia Romanza I

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

Course title

«ICONOGRAPHIC IMAGERY AND NARRATIVE CONSTRUCTION»

The course will analyse the dynamics through which the hagiographic elaboration takes shape by selecting from a vast array of semantic patterns, literary motifs, themes and pre-existing schemes on the basis of common factors on which a shrewd combinatory activity is grafted in order to give life to new diegetic scores in which the norms of a sort of pre-existing ‘grammar’ dictated by tradition intervene to limit and guide the paths of invention. In particular, the lives of Saint Anthony Abbot (Florence, BML, Mediceo Palatino 143; fresco in Bastia di Mondovì), and Saint Fiorenzo (fresco in Bastia di Mondovì) will be examined. Part of the course will be devoted to providing elements of codicology and material philology.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The examination shall consist of an oral check about the course's subject and its critical bibliography by means some questions made by the Commission. Students will have to read, translated and comment one or more texts analyzed during the lessons, and will able to discuss topics covered in the seminar. Student's valuation will take account not only of the knowledge of the course's contents but also of a good explanation and a correct use of the philology's specific language.

1 – translation of textual passages analyzed during the lessons

2 – abiliy to put texts in their historical and cultural context

3 – linguistic and stylistic analysis of texts
