OVERVIEW

Translating the Everyday. Clarice Lispector and Hilda Hilst: works, figures.

 

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course aims to refine cultural competences related to the Portuguese, Brazilian and African Portuguese-speaking contexts and to deepen reflection on Lusophone literatures with a focus on postcolonial discourse. In particular, in the Portuguese case, the history of the twentieth-century novel will be a place to interpret issues related to power, totalitarianism and imperialism.

The course aims at a literary and translating incursion into the everyday universe of two great Brazilian women writers of the 20th century (Clarice Lispector and Hilda Hilst).

The course aims to provide students with an in-depth knowledge of the writing of the self in relation to Brazilian literature of the second half of the 20th century with particular regard to the development of fiction, prose poetry and genre writing. 

Students who have attended this course and studied the proposed materials will be familiar with the literary forms and the most important figures in Brazilian literature coeval with the two authors who will be examined in depth; they will be familiar with numerous aspects and problems of modern Brazilian literature; they will be able to read and understand Brazilian texts; they will be able to analyse texts by referring them to the historical and socio-cultural context.

 

TEACHING METHODS

Lectures and seminars in italian and portuguese. Attendance is heartily recommended. Students who are unable to attend will have to study some supplementary material

while respecting the teaching objectives, take into account individual 

individual learning methods and provide suitable compensatory tools 

 

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

 

Translating the Everyday. The work of two great Brazilian writers of the 20th century, Clarice Lispector and Hilda Hilst, analysed starting from the relationship with their everyday life, with particular attention to the use of specific languages, descriptive mechanisms and the idea of the ‘model reader’. By Clarice Lispector, a series of ‘Crónicas’ from the 1960s and 1970s will be analysed specifically, also as a place to probe the folds of Brazilian society of the time. Selected texts from Hilda Hilst's ‘Pequenos discursos, e um grande’ are of a slightly later date.

The course includes a part dedicated to a collective translation workshop
