## OVERVIEW

The main topics covered in the class are:

- fundamentals of general physics (mechanics and electricity),

- applied thermodynamics,

- heat transfer.

## AIMS AND CONTENT

### LEARNING OUTCOMES

The aim of the class is to illustrate physical and technical fundamentals of environmental control which are essential in order to correlate the design choices with the energy efficiency and comfort requirements provided by current legislation and regulations.

### AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of the training activity, the student must be able to:

- know the main physical quantities used for energy analysis and study of comfort in buildings;

- solve elementary problems concerning the energy balance  of thermodynamic systems;

- calculate the heat transfer through the elements of the building envelope.

### PREREQUISITES

Math knowledge related to the following topics.

Calculation of areas and volumes.

Tangent sine cosine functions and their inverse functions.

Logarithm and exponential functions.

Absolute value.

Straight line passing through two points.

Circumference, parabola and hyperbola equations.

Solving first and second degree equations, equations with logarithms and trigonometric functions.

Knowing how to discuss simple inequalities.

Meaning of passage to the limit.

Differential calculus of a real variable: geometric interpretation of the concept of derivative and integral.

Calculation of derivatives and primitives of simple functions.

Ordinary differential equations to separable variables of the first and second order.

### TEACHING METHODS

Traditional frontal teaching with theory and exercises.

### SYLLABUS/CONTENT

FUNDAMENTALS OF GENERAL PHYSICS: mechanics, static of fluids, electricity.

APPLIED THERMODYNAMICS: thermodynamic systems, temperature, heat, mechanical work, first law of thermodynamics for closed and open systems, second law of thermodynamics, Bernoulli's equation, thermodynamic properties of pure substances, direct and inverse cycle thermal machines, inverse cycle.

HEAT TRANSMISSION: conduction, convection, radiation, combined heat exchange mechanisms. Notes on energy saving in buildings.

### EXAM DESCRIPTION

The exam consists of a written and an oral test.

The oral exam can be taken at most twice, in the two oral sessions immediately following the appeal to which the written test has been passed. If the two oral appeals following the writing fall in the same month, then the oral exam can also be postponed to the following month (always at most twice).

Two intermedate tests will be carried out during the year, one in the first half of November, the other in the first half of January. If successfully passed, the assignments will allow exemption from the written test for the oral appeals from January to May. Also in this case the oral test can be taken at most twice. The admission mark to the oral exam through the assignments is calculated by averaging the two marks. To be admitted this average must be higher than 18/32.

Remember that those who register for the exams and then do not show up for the appeal for which they are enrolled and do not unsubscribe from the list or at least notify the teacher of his absence via e-mail, if they do not produce a serious medical certificate impediment, skip the next appeal. This applies to both written and oral appeals.

During the written test and during the intermediate test, it is allowed to use, in addition to the calculator, a form completed by the student on the front and back on an A4 sheet and the Tables, downloadable from AULAWEB. The use of other notes or books is not allowed, under penalty of immediate cancellation of the task. During the exam, the use of mobile phones and other devices that can be connected to the network is strictly prohibited, under penalty of immediate cancellation of the task. In case of cancellation of the task, the next appeal is skipped.
