CODE 66501 ACADEMIC YEAR 2024/2025 CREDITS 1 cfu anno 2 DIETISTICA 9288 (L/SNT3) - GENOVA SCIENTIFIC DISCIPLINARY SECTOR MED/09 LANGUAGE Italian TEACHING LOCATION GENOVA SEMESTER 2° Semester MODULES Questo insegnamento è un modulo di: CLINICAL DIET THERAPY II TEACHING MATERIALS AULAWEB OVERVIEW The course aims to prepare the student for the professional skills to properly manage the geriatric patient. Training will be theoretical and practical and will also include human and communicative skills that will enable the student to carry out the profession. The knowledge is related to the changes observed with aging of the geriatric subject, to the role of nutrition in aging and related diseases. AIMS AND CONTENT LEARNING OUTCOMES The target is to understand medical terminology and disease classification, knowing how to differentiate etiology from risk factors and know how the patients are being examined. Possessing in-depth knowledge on dietotherapy of geriatric and metabolic diseases and the knowledge how to detect, prevent and correct nutritional deficiencies in the elderly. AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES Epidemiology of aging (especially Italy and Liguria) Aging of organs of geriatric patient Communication with the geriatric patient The fragility and clinical consequences of it (multidimensional evaluation, assessment scales, geriatric evaluation unit) Nutrition in chronic and geriatric diseases (including the major geriatric syndromes) Special clinical geriatric cases: obesity-sarcopenia, dysphagia, anorexia, malnutrition / under-nutrition Role of some nutrition components in the elder. TEACHING METHODS Frontal lessons and training course in geriatric wards with acute patients and hospitalized subjects in intermediate care Any Student with documented Specific Learning Disorders (SLD), or with any special needs, shall reach out to the Lecturer(s) and to the dedicated SLD Representative in the Department before class begins, in order to liase and arrange the specific teaching methods and ensure proper achievement of the learning aims and outcomes. SYLLABUS/CONTENT The student has to know the aging processes of the old person, especially the organs related to nutrition; the characteristics of the fragility, and the consequences of its presence; the student should have an in-depth knowledge of the changes in the old and the old-old nutrition, how to approach them, how to communicate and how to make realistic and effective changes; the student has to be able to evaluate the old persons through multidimensional evaluation and how to address them in the services network; the preventive and curative role of nutrition in chronic-degenerative diseases typical of the elderly has to be well known and the nutritional needs of the old and the very old patient should be planned; the student will address the problem of anorexia, obesity, sarcopenia and dysphagia, malnutrition/undernutrition in the old and the dementia; he has to learn also the correct choices in the course of major geriatric syndromes.
