OVERVIEW

The issues addressed in this course are related to the protection of the environment and the recovery of contaminated sites. The course aims to provide the theoretical and practical knowledge necessary for the management of contaminated sites and the planning of restoration interventions. Basic knowledge of national legislation will be provided.

The main problems and criticalities will also be discussed through the presentation and discussion of case studies.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course focuses on anthropogenic pollutants and their transport in the soil, subsoil and groundwater, with particular attention to emerging pollutants. The methods for managing and securing contaminated sites, the remediation processes, the methodologies and technologies for environmental treatment and restoration are illustrated.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of the course, students will be able to:

- have basic skills on the topics of pollution, remediation and purification of the soil, subsoil and groundwater,

- apply the principles of risk analysis to contaminated sites,

- compare different technologies and treatment systems,

- identify the least impactful operational solution and the best option from an environmental and economic point of view, among those applicable.

PREREQUISITES

For a profitable learning of the course, a basic knowledge of organic and inorganic chemistry and physics is required, but no formal prerequisite is required.

TEACHING METHODS

The course includes lectures supported by slides and analysis of case studies on the Italian territory.

Students who have valid certification of physical or learning disabilities on file with the University and who wish to discuss possible accommodations or other circumstances regarding lectures, coursework and exams, should speak both with the instructor and with Professor Federico Scarpa (federico.scarpa@unige.it  ), the Polytechnic School's disability liaison.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

The teaching program includes the presentation and discussion of the following topics:

- introduction to environmental policies and regulatory references to the italian environmental framework law - Legislative Decree 152.

- illustration of the main regulatory aspects

- use of risk analysis applied to contaminated sites
- definition of contamination concentrations and risk threshold concentrations

- definition of the environmental matrices, of the soil, subsoil and groundwater and of the main environmental parameters that describe them

- definition of the transport models of contaminants between receptor/sources

- classification of the main remediation techniques

- description and planning of chemical-physical interventions

- description and planning of biological and bioremediation interventions

- operational, emergency and permanent safety measures

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The exam consists of passing an oral exam.
During the winter session there will be three exam sessions (December, January and February) and three exam sessions during the summer session (June, July, September) and during the autumn teaching stop of the Polytechnic School. No further exam sessions will be held outside the normal periods of the Polytechnic School, except for students without teaching activities in their current academic year curriculum.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

Questions will be asked, in relation to the topics covered during the course and present in the material provided. The case studies analyzed during the lessons will be part of the exam.
During the examination it is necessary a correct understanding and a correct use of the Risk Analysis applied to contaminated sites too.
As regards soil remediation, a specific contamination situation of an environmental matrix will be presented and the student will have to identify the applicable options among all the remediation techniques seen during the lessons.
Presentation quality, correct terminology and critical thinking skills will also be assessed.
