CODE 61218 ACADEMIC YEAR 2024/2025 CREDITS 6 cfu anno 1 DESIGN NAVALE E NAUTICO 9008 (LM-12) - LA SPEZIA SCIENTIFIC DISCIPLINARY SECTOR ICAR/17 LANGUAGE Italian TEACHING LOCATION LA SPEZIA SEMESTER 1° Semester MODULES Questo insegnamento è un modulo di: DESIGN 1 STUDIO WORKSHOP 1 TEACHING MATERIALS AULAWEB OVERVIEW The module proposes a method of analysing space and the formal solutions that characterise it through representation, thus understood as a visual reference useful for the definition of an idea, and then deepening, through technical drawings, the constraints and potential determined by material and constructive aspects. Representation is proposed, in this context, as a method through which to manage and optimise design development. Visual aspects will therefore be the leading motif of choices and technical solutions adopted. AIMS AND CONTENT LEARNING OUTCOMES The teaching aims to enable students to achieve specific competence in the development of graphic documents useful for communication and the implementation of a project in the naval sector. These documents make specific reference, in the case of the course in question, to arrangement of the environments with the main living function of the passengers and on-board staff. The relationships between analogue design as an expression of the ideation and of the respective digital development will therefore be critically evaluated for an effective contextualization in the production cycle. AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES The objectives of the module are: to make the student aware of how representation constitutes a true design method, allowing the development of synthesis and critical analysis of the ideation process. In particular, the module proposes a critical analysis of spaces and formal solutions in terms of visuality, even before developing a merely functional approach. Compositional aspects will therefore be gradually integrated and deepened in light of further technical considerations that will ultimately lead to the formulation of executive designs. The concluding considerations are aimed at comparing the coincidence or estrangement of the final proposal with respect to the original idea. PREREQUISITES Basic knowledge of representation methods is required. TEACHING METHODS The teaching is organized into different and complementary activities, the main ones are:- frontal theoretical lessons and seminars;- analysis of videos and visual artifacts useful for the communication of the project;- analysis of photographic reports relating to the phases of setting up a vessel with a specific focus on the relationships between representation and construction;- collegial activities for discussion (debate, brief, brainstorming, reviews of works...);- practical applications.Interactive work tools and collegial self-assessment methods are used to encourage critical thinking, discussion, and collaboration in the development of project activities. The second part of the module is expressly dedicated to the development of the project theme organized in mixed working groups and with the support of the teacher, a theme that will be subject to presentation and evaluation during the exam. SYLLABUS/CONTENT The module begins with a reflection on the state of the art in naval design with reference to the potential introduced by representation tools and methods. Several case studies are then analyzed to interpret representation as a method for defining a design process and an ideation process. From the initial graphic syntheses, the analysis will move towards expressions specific to the executive project in order to conclude a cyclical journey that allows us to consider what discrepancies may arise between idea and realization in light of technical aspects. The module covers: - considerations on case studies of graphic design syntheses by masters of modern and contemporary architecture; - critical analysis of graphic elaborations in terms of communicative effectiveness and pragmatic adequacy. - introduction to the phases of project development and the various stages of production; - introduction to the main set-up techniques. - considerations on the role of representation as a method of project management. During the module, study visits are scheduled for thematic insights. The theoretical concepts and practical applications carried out during Industrial Design 1 are are propaedeutic and complementary for the themes and activities that will characterize Advanced Rapresentation. The specific theme of the year for each group of students is chosen based on personal cultural references and interests. The detailed content of the module is provided at the beginning of the module and the educational material is shared either on the module's aulaweb page or on a Teams channel dedicated to the module. The practical and project applications involve the use by students of certain software illustrated in other modules, including those available in the Office 365 and Adobe Creative Cloud packages, Rhinoceros for two-dimensional and three-dimensional graphic project elaborations, lidar technologies for surveying via tablet, and free software available on the market. ASSESSMENT METHODS The ability to structure a methodological and expressive path consistent with the declared cultural premises will be evaluated. Oral discussion with presentation of the works produced during the module. Each group must demonstrate the ability to coherently develop the initial project idea, supported by technical solutions that make the proposal plausible. The method for verifying the feasibility of what has been presented will be the display of increasingly detailed graphic works that define the dimensional technical aspects of the project. Furthermore, the ability to choose the graphic languages necessary for the development of the different phases of the project will be assessed, as well as the correctness of managing the different representation techniques. The oral interview and group activity carried out during the semester help to test the acquisition of soft skills like interpersonal skills, learning to learn, management skills and project creation.
