The module aims to provide students with a solid foundation of theoretical knowledge and design skills in the field of nautical interior design. The teaching pathway is structured in three phases: an initial stage dedicated to the historical overview and critical analysis of the current state of interior design in leisure boats and yachts, followed by the examination of the main typologies, and concluding with the development of a design-based case study.
The course compares nautical and civil interior design with in-depth critical reflections on contemporary design trends in yacht design applied both to boats and to pleasure boats with the dual objective of providing students with knowledge of nautical interiors and the related design issues and of allowing the student to develop, through an application case (project), design skills and competences such as to allow them to independently try their hand at an interior design project nautical.
The Interior Design 1.2 module pursues a dual objective: on the one hand, it aims to provide students with an in-depth knowledge of interior yacht design, encompassing both its historical evolution and contemporary expressions, with particular attention to design issues related to spatial distribution, functionality, and aesthetics; on the other hand, it seeks to foster the development of design skills and competencies through an applied case study (project), enabling students to independently engage in the interior design of pleasure craft and/or yachts.
The learning objectives of the module are structured according to a progressive acquisition of knowledge and skills, ranging from foundational understanding to the full development of advanced design competencies:
Upon completion of the module, students are expected to be able to employ appropriate tools for both the development and communication of the design project, demonstrating proficiency in the following areas:
There are no specific requirements.
The teaching is organised into diverse and complementary activities, the main ones being:
Interactive working tools and peer self-assessment methods are employed to foster critical thinking, dialogue, and collaboration in the development of design activities.
The second part of the module is specifically dedicated to the development of the design theme, organised in mixed working groups, which will be subject to presentation and evaluation during the final examination.
This module addresses the design of yacht interiors, organised across the primary functional decks (main deck, lower deck, upper deck). The course aims to explore the principles and practices necessary for creating living environments that are both comfortable and aesthetically coherent, with a particular focus on the sensory dimension and spatial experience on board.
The teaching approach combines lectures, case study analyses, and a design project exercise, with the objective of developing comprehensive and specialised skills in interior yacht design.
Main topics include:
Introduction to the history and evolution of interior yacht design _Origins and development of interior yacht design _Relationships and distinctions between interior yacht design and residential interior design
Contemporary scenario: designers and current themes _Study of contemporary firms and designers _Analysis of principal spatial layouts _Materials and finishes in interior yacht design _Colour theory applied to nautical environments _Principles of lighting design on board _Sensory experience on board
Exemplary case studies _Analysis and conception of interior environments on a yacht The design project exercise, conceived as a practical application of the theoretical concepts, will be detailed by the instructor following the theoretical portion of the module.

The examination is conducted orally and consists of the presentation and critical discussion of all written and graphical work developed during the module.
During the viva voce, the student is expected to:
The evaluation is based on:
- Completeness and graphic quality of the papers (consistency with the assigned theme);
- Ability to analyse and synthesise, linking theory and design practice;
- Clarity of presentation and command of terminology during the oral presentation;
- Transversal skills demonstrated (teamwork management, autonomy, problem solving).
The final outcome also contributes to the verification of competences related to the Open Badges foreseen:
- Personal competence (basic level),
- Learning to learn skills (basic level),
- Project management (basic level) and project creation (advanced level).
Students with disabilities or learning disorders are allowed to use specific modalities and supports that will be determined on a case-by-case basis in agreement with the Delegate of the Engineering courses in the Committee for the Inclusion of Students with Disabilities. Students are invited to contact the teacher of this course and copy the Delegate (https://unige.it/commissioni/comitatoperlinclusionedeglistudenticondisabilita.html).
