OVERVIEW

Industrial Design 1 is part of Design Workshop 2, which consists of two modules (with intermediate assessment) that are integrated to provide the design skills of the nautical designer in relation to the existing nautical product and the design principles of new sailing and motor boats..

Industrial Design 1 is developed on a theoretical basis and on practical applications which address the design aspects of medium-large sized sailing and/or motor boats.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course addresses aspects of the design of medium-large sailing and/or motor boats, combining them with the analysis of the evolution of design and technology, the study of shape, technical volumes and covered and uncovered habitable environments with the aim of providing students with the skills and competences to manage a correct project spiral on an application case study.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The objectives of the module are:

- provide the student with the knowledge and main concepts related to the design of motor and sailing yachts;

- provide the student with a sensitivity and knowledge towards the nautical heritage in general and towards the culture of yachting;

- provide the student with a clear methodology for approaching the project, with particular reference to the themes of sustainability and innovative materials and production methods.

Fundamental training moments are the creation of sensitivity towards the recreational boating sector with particular reference to the most recent market developments, communications dedicated to learning the elements of the design process and practical activities aimed at laying the foundations for the design of a boat.

Students, within the module, will acquire a methodology for approaching the project oriented towards the design of a new motor and/or sailing boat:

- research and analysis;

- conception and synthesis;

- elaboration and drafting of graphics

- sketches, technical drawings, models;

- presentation and exhibition of their work.

The practical project activities will enable students to learn to manage their social interactions with a collaborative attitude and constructive communication; they will also lead to autonomous decision-making, an aptitude for managing team work, coordination between several people and different skills as well as the ability to manage uncertainty.

PREREQUISITES

There are so specific requirements.

TEACHING METHODS

The teaching is delivered through different and complementary activities, the main being:

- theoretical lessons and seminaries;

- group activities (debates, brief, brainstorming, project reviews…);

- external visits;

- practical lessons (exercises and  projects).

The second part of the module is expressly dedicated to the development of the project theme organised in mixed working groups and with the support of the lecturers, a theme that will be the subject of presentation and evaluation during the examination.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

The module covers:

- general notions and principles of design of medium and large sailing and/or motor boats;

- evolution of design and technology, study of shape, technical volumes and habitable spaces;

- introduction to the characteristics, materials and construction techniques of modern sailing and motor boats;

- approach to the design of a modern boat: guidelines, paths and methodologies;

- study of references and illustration of case studies with practical applications.

During the course of the module, possible study visits are planned for thematic in-depth analysis.

The theoretical notions and practical applications carried out during Industrial Design 1 are preparatory and related to the themes and design activities that will characterize Advanced Representation.

The specific topic of the year is defined before the lessons start and it will be promptly communicated to students on the aulaweb page. Aulaweb is the main tool for communication and weekly updates by professors.

The practical and design applications involve the students' use of some of the software illustrated in other modules, including those included in the Office 365 and Adobe Creative Cloud packages, Rhinoceros for two- and three-dimensional project graphics, lidar tecnologies for surveying using tablets and commercially available free software.

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

Oral Examination: the examination consists of the delivery and presentation of all papers produced during the module and critical discussion of them also in relation to the theoretical content delivered during the semester.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

Oral discussion with a presentation of the graphic works produced during the teaching. The discussion of the materials presented by the students will be evaluated on the basis of completeness, the ability to interpret, deepen and render graphically with respect to the assigned topic, and aims to verify the knowledge and understanding of the theoretical notions delivered. The evaluation also considers the ability to critically rework the concepts acquired and orient them to practical design applications.

The illustrated modality allows the training objectives listed above to be achieved and the level of maturity attained with respect to the themes of the design of a new medium or large sized sailing or motor yacht. The development of the assigned project theme, the oral interview and the group activity carried out during the semester contribute to verifying the acquisition of soft skills such as interpersonal skills, learning to learn, management skills and project creation.
