The course examines a range of contemporary issues facing many metropolitan cities, including Genoa and Milan, such as gentrification, the relationship between cities and inner areas, social and civic innovation, and natural and anthropogenic risk. In examining these processes, particular attention is paid to the role of participatory processes and the relationship between local administrations and the territory. AIMS AND CONTENT LEARNING OUTCOMES The course intends to promote in the student the ability to recognise and govern urban problems in order to be able to outline a settlement reorganisation aiming at a substantial re-evaluation of architecture, urban connectivity and external arrangements in general. AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES The theoretical topics covered are intended to provide a basic knowledge of the discipline starting with the authors whose works are fundamental to understanding the city, the territory and the landscape. In-depth studies concern issues related to citizen participation processes in spatial plans, urban design and the definition of local development policies. The methodological part intends to provide a basic knowledge of the main research techniques in the social sciences, with particular reference to those of background and scenario analysis, the learning of which will also be aimed at the realisation of the applied part of the course. At the end of the course the student will have acquired knowledge related to - to some fields of study of urban sociology and of the environment and territory; - to the themes of participation, with reference to the different paradigms, models and methodologies of intervention - the methods and techniques of empirical research in the social sciences. They will also have developed the ability to apply the acquired knowledge in the development of a socio-territorial research project conducted during the application part of the course. SYLLABUS/CONTENT The course is divided into three distinct but interrelated parts: THEORETICAL PART dedicated to the themes: Urbanisation/society/community City/environment/landscape Participatory processes/governance/management of the commons METHODOLOGICAL PART dedicated to an in-depth study on: Methods and techniques of social research and urban foresight Research projects and field research APPLICATION PART focused on the realisation of: an empirical research experience conducted, in part, during the course and guided by the lecturer.
