OVERVIEW

The main objective of this training course is to provide technical professionals with the ability to correctly read and interpret the contents of an industrial design and therefore, reciprocally, the ability to replicate and compose, through the design, the geometric, morphological, dimensions and technologies necessary to illustrate and define an industrial component.

The ability to read and understand a drawing, on the other hand, is still an essential quality in the exercise of the profession. Furthermore, sometimes the need to express a drawing (in the context of an office or construction site technical meeting) obliges the professional to be able to express a freehand technical sketch which must be understood by the other bystanders and validated in the context of a contract advancement process.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The student will gain knowledge related to basic elements of industrial design in its characterizing aspects. Therefore, the fundamentals of graphics and representation will be studied in compliance with international regulations, principles of ergonomics, morphology and coupling of components as well as requirements for use and performance. The main industrial production technologies will also be illustrated, together with fundamental aspects related to their sustainability. The student will acquire basic information about the product system and will be able to represent it in the form of orthogonal projections and three-dimensional representations using CAD software, these latter accompanied by a technical report containing evaluations of form, function and relative constitution of the assemblies (bill of materials).

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

Monographic exercise
To facilitate the learning process of the information listed above, each candidate will be invited to produce a graphic representation illustrating an industrial product agreed with the teaching staff.

The choice of the object must reflect the following requirements:

Transportability: it must be easily transportable in the classroom.

Expendability: Will have to be disassembled into components and (if necessary) be broken, sacrificing functionality.

Heterogeneity: must be a multi-component object.

By way of example, the object to be represented could be a component for the kitchen, such as a coffee maker, a blender, a potato masher, an airtight jar, etc.

It could be a household appliance such as a vacuum cleaner, an old telephone, a radio set, a table clock or alarm clock, a table lamp.

It could be a shop tool such as a drill (electric or hand), a parrot wrench, pliers or pliers.

It could be a toolbox or for sewing work.

It could be a piece of furniture such as a folding chair, or a (small) chest of drawers.

TEACHING METHODS

Theoretical and regulatory references
Industrial technical drawing is a (graphic) language through which information is shared. Like all languages, this too is based on principles and rules that govern the grammar and syntax of communication.

To understand the principles of technical representation it will be appropriate to follow a learning path that will touch and illustrate various topics:

From vision to representation.

cylindrical or conical projections,

Orthogonal projections,

isometrics,

perspectives.

Disciplinary approach: from the general to the particular.

Recipient of the drawing: the client, the builder, the user.

Fundamentals of technology: component and assembly of a technical subject.

Main constituent materials of the components, processes and applications.

Metals, glasses, plastic materials, composite materials, woods, stones.

Machining from solid, fusion and die-casting, moulding, drawing, bending, calendering.

Additive manufacturing

Scale factors: the picture of reality (from large to small):

The design of the territory,

architectural design,

the design of an industrial product,

the drawing of a mechanical component,

the design of an electronic component.

Illustrate the apparent reality.

From photography to figurative illustration.

Illustrate the technology of a component or assembly through a drawing that transcends and illustrates BEYOND apparent reality (typically section).

See and illustrate the reality INSIDE the products.

The drawing according to a construction process,

coupling (permanent or temporary),

of industrial assembly.

Elements of drawing graphics and dimensioning:

Layout.

Linetypes.

Hatches.

Technical specifications

Quotes:

reference to components,

reference to the respective processes,

reference to the respective couplings,

reference to the dimensions of the assembly.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

Representation techniques.

The student will acquire knowledge relating to the basic elements of industrial design in its characterizing aspects.

Therefore, the requirements for use and the performance of the industrial product, fundamentals of ergonomics, fundamentals of graphics and representation, notes on the main industrial production technologies will be studied.

In particular, topics relating to the durability of industrial products, fundamentals of component morphology and fundamentals of component coupling will be dealt with within the course.

The student will acquire basic knowledge about the product system and the production scope and will be able to understand elements of sustainability in relation to industrial production.

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

Passing the exam must demonstrate that the student will have gained awareness of the following aspects:

have individually produced a series of freehand graphics that properly and exhaustively illustrate the agreed object, highlighting the following aspects:

the constituent elements,

the materials used,

the opening and closing kinematics,

The dimensions,

the principle of coupling construction between the different components.

The interview must therefore demonstrate understanding and awareness of the different representations adopted according to the objective to be achieved.

FURTHER INFORMATION

Gear and equipment
To meet the purpose of the course, drawing exercises to be carried out freehand with pencil and paper will be adopted which can be carried out with the following essential equipment.

2 pencils: one of HB hardness and one of 2B softness.

1 eraser (possibly also a "rubber-kneader" to clean the sheet, if it is soiled by graphite dust).

10 or 20 sheets of white A3 paper of 80 or 100 gsm (typically photocopier paper).

A ruler with a millimeter scale or a scale gauge (useful for scaling the drawing).

A spray fixer to preserve the result of the exercise without deterioration.

A folder to store the exercises.
