OVERVIEW

The course is held through classroom lectures and is aimed at studying the main unit operations, the related chemical and process plants and their management. Basic notions relating to the type, configuration and evaluation of the equipment / systems are provided

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The student will acquire useful knowledge to understand the fundamental unit operations of the chemical industry for the treatment of solids to be able to apply the knowledge acquired in any industrial process. The student will be able to learn about the transformation, transport and management of solid particulate materials and their properties. Laboratory activities are planned.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course aims to provide a general knowledge of the unit operations of chemical plants to the students. Some examples of unit operations will be illustrated such as: unitary operations of solids treatment plants; evaporators / concentrators, processes for the production of bioenergy.

TEACHING METHODS

Lectures are held in the classroom and in laboratory.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

-Introduction to unit operations and different fields of application and general information on separation technologies;

- Evaporators / concentrators theory and related plant solutions. Single and multiple effect evaporators.

- Ideal and non-ideal sieving, theory of grinding and related equipment: crushers, mills and pulverizers; solid liquid separation operations; sedimentation: theory and related equipment; filtration theory and related equipment.

- Examples of biochemical plants for the production of biodiesel and bioethanol.

- Laboratory activity.

The exam will be held in oral form in the sessions scheduled as per the official regulations

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The preparation of the students is ascertained through an oral exam, by which the students' understanding of the topics covered during the course will be assessed. In addition, the quality of the exposure, the correct use of technical terminology and critical reasoning skills are evaluated.

Working students and students with SLD certification, disability or other special educational needs are advised to contact the teacher at the beginning of the course to agree on teaching and examination methods that, in compliace with teaching objectives, take into account individual learning modalities.

During laboratory activity, students are required to have their own cotton lab coat, while the personal protective equipment will be provided by the teacher.
