OVERVIEW

The course aims to provide the basic criteria for the design and sizing of the main elements of machines within mechanical systems. First, the acquired skills of structural mechanics will be applied to the sizing of basic elements in static conditions and variable loads. Afterwards, the main elements of machines will be studied to learn the criteria of choice and use for the construction of general mechanical systems

The course provides students with the tools and analytical methodologies necessary for a correct understanding and application of the structural design criteria in the static field of the main mechanical organs

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course aims to provide the basic criteria for the design and sizing of the main elements of machines that can be found within mechanical and energy systems. In the first part of the course, we will start from the acquired skills of structural mechanics to apply them to the sizing of basic elements (axes, shafts and other simple components) in conditions of static and variable loads, cyclically or with other laws of variation over time. Subsequently, the main elements of the machines (pressure vessels, bearings, threaded and welded connections...) will be studied to understand and learn the sizing/selection criteria and their correct use for the construction of general mechanical systems.

At the end of the course, students will have the skills to deal with the design of a mechanical system in which, starting from assigned design inputs of a functional and performance type, various structural components must be combined in a coherent and harmonious way to prevent possible failures but ensuring a product with adequate manufacturability and cost performances.

PREREQUISITES

To deal with the course in an adequate and effective way, the skills of mechanical design (from the teaching of industrial technical design), structural mechanics (from the teaching of mechanics of structures) and applied mechanics (from the teaching of mechanics applied to machines) are fundamental.

Passing the relevant exams, although not formally required, is strongly recommended for the correct understanding of the course contents.

TEACHING METHODS

The course will be delivered through lectures in which the contents of the course will be illustrated with the help of graphic and multimedia illustrative material. The various contents will be explained through the application to concrete practical examples, also with enhancement of the mechanical quantities involved.

A couple of seminars will be organized on as many topics offered by industrial experts to complement the illustrated contents in the related lessons.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

Part One: Application of Structural Mechanics Methods to the Sizing of Mechanical Components

  1. Structural mechanics: state of tension and deformation; Material Failure Criteria
  2. Axes and shafts: definitions, calculation of acting stresses and static checks
  3. Notch effect and stress concentration
  4. Fatigue of materials: basic definitions and concepts, microscopic and macroscopic aspects, basic diagrams, fatigue life and fatigue strength, multiaxial stresses, strength tests

Part Two: Elements of Machine Design

  1. Axisymmetric thin-walled solids, pressure vessels
  2. Rolling bearings: introduction, classification, standardizations, basic sizing criteria, bearing mounting
  3. Threaded connections: definitions, forcing diagrams, tightening of screws, strength of connections, effect of external loads, prevention of spontaneous untightening
  4. Non-removable connections: welding, notes on the main technologies, basic verification criteria; Structural bonding, applications and criteria for choosing adhesives

The contents will be illustrated with practical examples and exercises, including numerical ones.

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The evaluation will consist of a written exam that will take place in two parts:

  1. A series of multiple-choice/open-ended questions on various aspects of the course topics
  2. one or two exercises (depending on the difficulty) applying the topics of the course

The two parts will give a maximum score of 16/30 each to arrive at a grand total of up to 32/30.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The questions are aimed at ascertaining the understanding of the construction and design problems of the components or problems covered during the course.

The exercises aim to evaluate the student's ability to apply the design and sizing methods treated, also providing correct results numerically valued (to evaluate the understanding of the orders of magnitude of the quantities involved).
