OVERVIEW

This module introduces the foundational concepts of artificial intelligence through a historical and critical lens, with a focus on machine learning. Students will acquire theoretical foundations and understand how AI is transforming the world of work, design processes, and contemporary society.

The course provides designers with an introductory and accessible view of the fundamental principles of Artificial Intelligence, focusing on predictive and generative AI, as well as exploring the ethical implications related to AI in design.

Objectives

  • Understand the basic concepts of Artificial Intelligence.

  • Distinguish between predictive and generative AI.

  • Analyze the ethical implications of AI in design.

  • Evaluate how AI can influence and enhance design processes.

  • Gain familiarity with the fundamental principles of Artificial Intelligence.

  • Identify the various applications of AI in design.

  • Discuss ethical issues associated with the use of AI.

  • Apply basic AI knowledge to improve design projects.

PREREQUISITES

Ability to analyse and solve complex design-related problems.
Basic knowledge of programming concepts and ability to use design software
Familiarity with digital tools and online collaboration platforms.
Basic knowledge of calculus and statistics.
Ability to apply quantitative methods for analysing and solving design problems.
Ability to critically evaluate the ethical and practical implications of emerging technologies in design.

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The exam consists in the development of a group project that demonstrates understanding of the course content and the ability to apply the acquired tools in a design context.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The evaluation is based on the assessment of:

• Knowledge of key concepts

• Critical analysis skills
