OVERVIEW

The first part of the course retraces chronologically, from Neoclassicism to the present day, the history of contemporary art through the analysis of the main movements, personalities and works. The second part aims to give an understanding of the evolution of advertising graphics through the analysis of posters related to sea travel, with a particular focus on cruise lines, shipyards and transport ships. The course will conclude with the analysis of two case studies: Costa Crociere and Cantieri Riva.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The teaching aims to provide adequate knowledge of the languages of contemporary art and graphic design, highlighting their implications and possible relationships with planning in the field of naval-nautical design.

PREREQUISITES

Basic knowledge of the main historical and cultural events of the 19th and 20th centuries.

TEACHING METHODS

The teaching is delivered tin this way:

- theoretical lessons;

- group activities;

- visits to exhibitions and museums and meetings with specialists in the discipline

- practical lessons (exercises and short projects).

 

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

The history of contemporary art (19th and 20th century): origins and developments; main artists and movements. 

The history of graphic design with specific focus on the nautical topic.

A Handbook of Contemporary Art History (XIX-XX Century) chosen by the student  and the following volume: F. ALFANO MIGLIETTI, Per-corsi di arte conemporanea. Dall'Impresionismo a oggi, Skira, Milano 2011.

Richard Hollis, Graphic Design: A Concise History, Themes and Hudson, 2001.

Further bibliography will be indicated during the course. The final bibliography will be available on aulaweb at the end of the course.

EXAM DESCRIPTION

Oral examination and practical test

Erasmus students not proficient in Italian may request a substitutive bibliography, and take the examination in English or Fench.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The oral examination is aimed at ascertaining knowledge of the main topics of contemporary art history and graphic design.

The practical test consists of the design of an original advertising poster with a nautical theme together with its oral presentation.
