AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course will analyse two specifically Latin American approaches to philosophical/cultural thinking, i.e., the Philosophy of Liberation and Decolonial Thinking, from an intercultural perspective. The sociocultural analysis of the complex Latin American context will be carried out by looking at both endogenous and exogenous factors.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

Upon completion of the course students will be able to:

- demonstrate familiarity with the historical and social processes that characterize the Hispanic-American identity;

- master a basic discourse analysis method allowing them to link social conditions of meaning production, symbolic contents and forms of expression;

 - examine ideological representations in the texts studied by looking at topics, concepts and argumentative structure;

- analyze the contexts where knowledge is produced and how it is represented;

- identify the cultural history milestones of the period studied;

- read critically and debate on issues related to the cultural history of the period studied;

- observe the writing style of the texts examined.

 

PREREQUISITES

None

TEACHING METHODS

Interactive lectures. Students will be actively involved in the analysis of the texts presented.

 

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

The evolution of a specifically Latin American school of thought that characterized the second part of the 20th century will be tackled, focusing on different approaches, developments, internal maturation and critiques. Drawing on the Philosophy of Liberation and Decolonial Thinking, the course will look at how traditional knowledge about Latin America should be re-thought and re-positioned within global contexts, beyond national borders.
