    The teaching unit provides an overview of economic growth and development from the Early Modern Age to the 21st century in a comparative perspective, describing the main changes and the role of this subject within the curriculum.

    AIMS AND CONTENT

    LEARNING OUTCOMES

    The teaching unit provides a systematic and interpretative framework of the most important changes that have characterized the evolution of the international economic system since the Industrial Revolution, focusing on key topics such as population, agriculture, international trade, manufacturing, and finance.

    AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

    At the end of the teaching unit, students should be able to:

    • identify and describe the main stages of economic development from the pre-industrial age to the dawn of the 21st century;
    • evaluate the importance of the factors conditioning the current economic context as a result of historical transformations in the past, making use of the examples discussed in class;
    • use the basic disciplinary vocabulary to express the acquired concepts appropriately.

    PREREQUISITES

    There are no specific requirements.

    TEACHING METHODS

    Frontal lectures, during which the topics in the syllabus will be covered, and self-assessment exercises to enable the student to test the acquisition of basic knowledge and concepts of the discipline.

    SYLLABUS/CONTENT

    The teaching unit will cover the following topics:

    • Growth and economic development in the long run
    • Before the modern industry: preindustrial societies
    • The start of modern Industry. England’s 18th century
    • Development patterns: the Second Comers.
    • From the first globalization to the second World War
    • The modern economic development from 1945 to 1979
    • The second globalization and its crises

    EXAMS

    EXAM DESCRIPTION

    There is a written examination, which is based on a mix of multiple-choice and open-ended questions. The test is passed if an overall mark of at least 18/30 is obtained.

    Further details on the structure of the examination will be explained during the lectures and published on the Aulaweb page of the teaching unit.

    The examination procedures are the same for attending, non-attending and Erasmus students.

    ASSESSMENT METHODS

    The exam will test the level of acquisition of basic knowledge in relation to the topics developed during the lectures and contained in the textbook. In particular, the ability to correctly situate the proposed topic in the period and context of reference, to adequately illustrate the most relevant aspects and to express oneself with appropriate terminology will be taken into account.

    Exam registration is mandatory.

    To help students understand how to prepare for the exam and the required level of depth, examples and simulations will be proposed during lectures and made available on Aulaweb.
