OVERVIEW

This course is divided in two modules: one focused on field mapping and the second one is an introduction to the interpretation of geological maps.  The “Geological Mapping 1” concerns the basic methods and techniques for the collection of geological data in the field (i.e.; lithology, stratigraphy, structures, etc.) and their representation on a geological map.  The “Introduction to Geological Maps” deals with the reading and interpretation of geological maps and the representation of three-dimensional geological structures on a geological cross-section.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course aims to introduce students to the basics of Geological Mapping and Geological Maps interpretation. Students will be trained to the preparation and interpretation of geological maps, as well as to the construction of geologic cross-sections. The course includes exercises in the lab and in the fields.

PREREQUISITES

In order to be able to deal with the contents of this course, basic knowledge of the reading of topographic maps, of petrography (classification of rocks), stratigraphy and structural geology are necessary.

TEACHING METHODS

Students who have valid certification of physical or learning disabilities on file with the University and who wish to discuss possible accommodations or other circumstances regarding lectures, coursework and exams, should speak both with the instructor and with Professor Sara Ferrando (sara.ferrando@unige.it), the Department’s disability liaison.
