OVERVIEW

The course introduces basic notions and concepts pn Data Science. The different steps of a common pipeline of Data Science will be discussed: data collection, data analysis and visualization.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Learning about a data science pipeline by exploring its various stages from both a theoretical and practical perspective.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course follows the main stages of a typical pipeline od Data Science: from the data collection, to the analysis for knowledge extraction, to the visualization of data and results for both experts and non-experts users.

 

Final objective of the course will be gaining theoretical and practical familiarity with a Data Science pipeline and its different steps. The final project will be occasion to exploit this knowledge in a full pipeline developed by the student.

PREREQUISITES

Programming skills

Basics of calculus, linear algebra, statistics and probability

TEACHING METHODS

Theoretical, frontal classes will be coupled with hands-on activities

The course will cover the following topics

  • An introduction to Data Science
  • Data types
  • Data preparation
  • Data exploration
  • Data visualization
  • Online Analytical Processing (OLAP)
  • Statistical tests
  • Predictive models

Slides and hands-on material will be shared by the instructors.

Additional material will be occasionaly provided depending on the needs

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The exam will include

  • a project, for which students will have to develop a notebook and prepare slides to be discussed by means of a short oral presentation or a written report
  • a written exam including theoretical and pratical exercises

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The evaluation of both parts of the exam will include clarity in the presentation, quality of the proposed solutions and critical thinking.
