AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course aims to provide knowledge on atypical development in the first three years of life and on the main risk factors associated with some early-onset developmental disorders such as autism, specific language disorder, etc.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of the course, the student will:

1) know the main disabilities affecting children in the first three years of life and the main inclusive models and approaches in early education

2) use this knowledge to develop an observation project of children with disability or neurodevelopmental disorders in an educational setting

3) read and understand a diagnosis of disability to develop an educational project

4) identify the needs of children with disability and their families.

TEACHING METHODS

The course will include both lectures and learning activities to help students use their knowledge in real life situations. Students’ participation and engagement will be encouraged by means of discussions on complex situations and case studies.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

The programme of the course will include: 1) the description of disabilities and disorders in early development and risk factors associated to early disability; 2) inclusive models and approaches in early education; 3) observation methods in early development.

The course will contribute to the achievement of Goal 4 of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development: Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.

Slides and other materials will be available on Aulaweb.

Lectures will be delivered in Italian and bibliography is in Italian. The Lecturer can provide foreign students with a comprehensive collection of teaching materials in English to prepare for the final exam, and this exam can be taken in English.

EXAM DESCRIPTION

Written exam with open-ended questions. Examples of the questions will be available to students in aulaweb.

To attend the exam, it is necessary to register online at “Esame scritto” (written exam). To record the grade, it is necessary to register online at “Registrazione”.

Students who do not pass the exam are invited to contact the lecturer.

Erasmus students will find specific information on exam procedures and learning materials on the e-learning platform AulaWeb.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The written test aims to ascertain contents and skills acquired, e.g. types and specific characteristics of neurodevelopmental disorders and disabilities and inclusive models in early education. Open ended questions will also evaluate critical skills, communication skills and appropriate use of technical vocabulary and language.
