In line with this objective, the topics covered include: General criteria for classifying visual impairment: definition of visual impairment, epidemiological characteristics and causes of visual impairment, and the main pathologies responsible for visual impairment across different age groups; Legislative framework for visual impairment, both at the international and national levels, with particular reference to Law 138/2001; Semiological techniques for assessing visually impaired patients: orthoptic examination and instrumental tests necessary for patient evaluation and follow-up; Rehabilitation techniques for visual impairment: detailed presentation of aids and devices for visually impaired individuals; Psychological aspects related to visual impairment: psychological impacts and consequences in various areas of daily life across different age groups; Clinical case studies. By the end of the course, students will have acquired fundamental knowledge related to visual impairment (legislative aspects, causes, and consequences of visual disability). They will be able to assess visually impaired patients by evaluating their residual visual function and psychological condition, create an appropriate care setting, design and develop a customized rehabilitation program, and implement suitable rehabilitation strategies. TEACHING METHODS The course includes 10 hours of lectures with the use of slides and videos. SYLLABUS/CONTENT Framework of the Professional Role of the Orthoptist. National and global policies on visual impairment and its prevention. Definition of visual impairment, classification, and causes across different age groups. Psychological aspects of visual impairment in adulthood and pediatrics. Functional visual assessment of the visually impaired patient in pediatric and adult age: tests for determining visual acuity for distance and near, perimetric and microperimetric examination, tests for color vision, stereopsis, and contrast sensitivity, adaptometry, imaging techniques.
