  • Identify the midwife's professional competence with regard to postpartum care
  • Identify the midwife's professional competence in providing care for a healthy motherin postpartum period
  • Identify the professional competence of the midwife in caring for a healthy newborn
  • Identify the process of midwifery care for a healthy newborn
  • Understand the physiology of breastfeeding
  • Identify the process of caring for the breastfeeding mother and the mother feeding her infant artificial formula

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

  • Identifying the midwife's professional competencies with regard to care in the postpartum period.
  • Definitions of puerperium and post partum
  • Identify the process of midwifery care for the healthy mother
  • The process of care during the postpartum period:
  • Feeding and hydration of the nursing mother
  • Rest/sleep
  • Providing appropriate support for baby blues, post-partum depression and puerperal psychosis
  • Vital parameters, detection and interpretation (MEOWS card)
  • Monitor and ensure progressive uterine involution
  • Observe the characteristics of the lochi
  • Ensuring that the perineal suture and/or surgical wound is checked if necessary
  • Self-treatment of the laparotomic suture
  • Ensuring care and hygiene of the perineum
  • Assessing pelvic risk factors and promoting recovery of perineal tone
  • Control diuresis and encourage first urination in the post partum 
  • Promote bowel function
  • Promote early mobilisation
  • Know the guidelines for administering anti-D immunoprophylaxis
